Instead of wasting my time coming up with everything wrong with Gil and the way he handled this situation, I wasted my time coming up with an alternate ending to this storyline, which I hope you’ll agree is a dark and disturbing improvement:

  1. Sad but true… nobody actually hangs themselves in the happy world of Milford. I mean, Marty Moon drives drunk, and does he wind up like Aldo Kelrast? No — he just falls asleep behind a dumpster, and becomes a boring plod behind the mic.

And allow me to fill in a couple of the things wrong with this passage…

    – “We don’t even know where he lives!” How the hell big is Milford anyway? Yancey isn’t living in a gated community. I doubt his number is unlisted. And besides, Rich Bozich is a frickin’ journalist! Well, at least he pretends to write for the student paper. You’d think he might have a clue how to find someone. Especially someone who could have been, oh, a good story in the student paper.

    – “With help from Chief Lind.” Because Coach Gil doesn’t do that Internet crap.

Still to come: Ken Burger becomes best friends with Clambake. “Yeah, I hated the old dude when we thought he was a baseball Yoda… but now that we know he’s a fraud, I love the guy!”

After that: a belated return to the goofy gals o’ softball. Has Brynna’s hair grown out yet?

  2. I love the fact that it’s his JOB (in bold) to know that Clambake’s a phony, and yet it took him the entire baseball season to deal with it. “I realize you’re a fake, but if I wait to confront you, I don’t have to coach the team this season! And then I look like a ‘good coach’ in the end! It’s a brilliant plan! Now I just have to club my head with this stick…”

  3. So did he lie about how he got his nickname too? It’s really the only explanation for the overall lameness of that particular anecdote.

  4. “The Alternate Ending”
    Absolutely brilliant!

  5. I think the most mind-boggling thing about the whole Clambake-is-a-fraud scenario is the fact that he could have made up virtually anything about his past, but instead chose to telling long, rambling stories that bored everyone to tears.

  6. this storyline rivals Mary Worth’s current yawnfest for the coveted “Most Boring Comic Strip of 2007″ award…

  7. Wow. So… Thorp knew the old man was full of it, but because of indifference/laziness/insanity just let him ramble on and on?

Actually, that totally makes sense given that he works in a high school. I had plenty of teachers that would have let random old farts come in and tell long, implausible stories if it would have gotten them out of work.

  8. I think Neal Rubin has officially run out of ideas. Good thing Jason is still going strong. The alternate ending is fantastic!

  9. I dug how today’s strip featured the return of The Window Shade That Talks To Itself.
