This Week in Milford

You blew the plot and we all hate you.

…apparently Marty Moon’s fantasy baseball team is still active and in the championship showdown!

…then, Gil bides his pre-tee time by talking dirty to Marjie Ducey. Telling her to slap around his 12-3 Oakwood? Knock off the filth, Gil.

…and then they all..wait? They’re still playing baseball? Really?

6/26/12

Milford’s championship hopes are going…going…

6/27/12

GONE! (wap!)

At least the innuendo in panel two is alive and well!

As is the brutal honesty of panel three… Finally everyone shows how much they hate Dinky!

Up next: Dinky squeezes his head until it explodes! Also, Big Bob DoucheStuff gets four more girlfriends!

  1. Dammit, does Milford ever win in these situations? They are the Chicago Cubs of imaginary sports. So many seasons end with yet another improbable just-miss.

Because of their relentless inability to make the playdowns, I’m surprised, especially with all their mouthing-off to the boosters, that Mr and Mrs Thorp weren’t run out of town on a rail years ago. And no, Marty, I don’t mean a rail of cocaine.

  2. First off, Marjie’s glasses somehow fit over her platinum blond hair. Next we have the drive to the wall that the outfielder is ready to run thru the fence to catch. Then we have a stupendous catch where the OF jumps higher then Lebron and Jordan combined to catch. Ha!!! No way he has time to jump ON the fence, jump again, and catch the ball. Then we have the ball on the hat After the games over. Take it off, you moron. Your artist sucks worse than your team.

  3. MIlford used to win quite a bit, back when creator Jack Berrill was running things. I think Neal Rubin’s attitude is that it’s not about sports, it’s about learning valuable life lessons, and you can learn a lot by losing.

Either that, or he really, really hates his job and takes it out on Milford High.

Ad for Dinky Dinny… he hangs around somebody else’s relationship like a stray dog, and he laughs when he’s insulted. Somebody needs an intervention.

  4. Just to rub it in, the Oakwood outfielder does a complete pommel horse routine on the fence, and sticks the landing on the dismount.

    Season Over!

  5. Worth noting that pommel-horse routine, everyone. I sorta doubt the OF had time to make that torso twist; seems more logical he’d have made the catch running instead of twisting to backhand it.

But as Moon and John point out, this strip seems to be less about success on the field and more about accepting a teen with personal issues by letting them play sports.

  6. The funny thing is, Marjie asked Gil what he thought about the softball players’ support for Darby O’Gill and her not-so-little person.

Hey, Tod Andrews pwns Gil. Again. Yay.

    “Season over!”

Marty’s mom: “Oh good, it’s time for dinner.”

    “Mom!”

  7. Since it appears reasonable to assume both that baseball and softball seasons have ended just before July 1st, it’s time for a visit from the ol’ Milford Mudlark Record Book.xls!

Hard to believe it, but baseball was actually the last Milford sport to reach the playdowns, back with Derek “Slim” Chance in 2010. Only a two year drought!
Softball, however, has not made the playdowns since 2004. Ouch.

Unlike football, but as with basketball, the strip most likely does not depict every game the baseball and softball teams are implied to play. Milford Mudlark Record Book.xls only tracks games that the strip depicts, or games that are said to have taken place, whether specifically or via a stated record or winning/losing streak. Rubin does not do the whole stated record thing anywhere close to as often as his predecessors, but he actually did do it this year.

Milford Mudlark Baseball Results 2012 (12-4)
    W – ? Clay
    W – ? Tates Creek
    W – @ Tilden
    W – @ Central
    L – @ Oakwood
    W – @ Valley Tech
    L – @ Madison
6W 1L – known because record was stated to be 12-3 after win over Goshen
    W – ? Goshen
    L – ? Oakwood
Valley Conference opponents Jefferson and New Thayer did not appear this season, but did last year.

Gil’s baseball record since 2001 stands at 118-60 with 16 unknown outcomes. Gil has been at least .500 in every season during this time. Against the Valley Conference, Gil’s record is 60-36 with 2 unknown outcomes. In the playdowns, Gil’s record is 11-5 with appearances in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2010 and state tournament appearances in 2001 and 2003. Adding Gil’s baseball record from 1958-1993 puts his record at 590-433-2 with 16 unknowns. I don’t have enough of the strips from 94-00 to supplement the record book, but I do recall that Milford won the 2000 state baseball championship on the strength of roider Jarvis White (Future Three Sport Pro!) and the pitching of freshman Marty DeJong.

Milford Mudlark Softball Results 2012 (5-4)
    W – vs. Lafayette
    L – @ Dunbar
    W – ? Valley Tech
    W – vs Jefferson
    L – vs Tilden
    L – @ Goshen
    W – ? Unknown
    L – ? Tilden
    W – @ Jefferson
Valley Conference opponents Central, Oakwood, Madison, and New Thayer do not appear this season. Central and Oakwood last appeared last year, Madison and New Thayer have not played Milford since 2009.

Milford softball first appeared in 2004, the semester before Girl’s Basketball first appeared, actually. It has not been heavily depicted, though. The 9 games depicted this year are the most ever, besting 2004′s 8 games (though an additional 2 games were stated to have taken place but not shown in 2004).
The team’s record since 2004 is 27-17 with 4 unknown outcomes, and 17-11 with 1 unknown outcome in the Valley Conference. Their playdown record is 1-1, with their lone appearance coming in that first season of 2004.
Softball has had three head coaches during this time, Jessie Jensen (2004), Mimi Thorp (2005-present), and Glory Alcala (1 game in 2011). Jensen’s record is 8-2, 5-1 in the Valley, and 1-1 in that lone playdown berth. Mimi’s record is 18-15 with 4 unknowns, 11-10 and 1 unknown in the Valley, and no playdown appearances. Glory Alcala’s lone game was a Valley Conference victory over Central. I’m sure the team’s record without coach Mimi is just a coincidence…

No more Milford Mudlark Record Book.xls until football season ends short of the playdowns next December. I know you’re all disappointed…

  8. That’s Mike Trout’s kid brother catching Mini’s deep fly. WAP! HRONK! FOOZLE!

I am in awe of billy’s historical analysis. It’s worthy of a case of Nut Boys. They’re shitty!

  9. Two more inches and I Da Ho would have let Dinny be her Mr. Big.

  10. Said it before, Billy, you are a steely eyed missile man. Or insane. Or both. Has Marty Moon or Marjie Ducey ever contacted you to borrow Milford Mudlark Record Book.xls?
