Fifty years in the bucket…

Filed under: Coach Kaz, football, Gil Thorp, metapost, The Bucket — jasbeattie @ 8:57 am

Second gayest Ramones T-shirt ever now available in the Milford Catalog o’ Varsity Stuff*. (First Gayest here.)

Stacie sure has some wicked short arms, eh? Might be the first time Whigham has drawn hands way too small.

Editor of the Trumpet? The good news here is that this means that piggy-pants loser Rick Bozich has moved on. Additional good news is that you can play tic-tac-toe in the third panel while enjoying the playful interactions of these two heterosexual buddies.

*Man-boobs not included.

We interrupt this story that hasn’t really started yet to inform you that I’ve now been been blogging about this comic for fifty years! Or wait, maybe not, it just feels like it sometimes…

In celebration of this exciting occasion, not only do you get an awesome close-up of old-school Gil’s feathered hair, but several articles and press releases throughout the web-o-sphere (including at least two that at press time could not spell “Thorp” properly in the headline): a Chicago Tribune article, another Chicago area article, and an interview of Gil by Marty Moon!

Additionally, Take Five Press, our favorite publisher of Gil Thorp books, has announced a new compilation entitled, “Tales from the Bucket” Check out this press release for more information! But remember, don’t let anyone all but force you to go the the Bucket, you have to want to go yourself.

  1. Happy anniversary Gil…have a few at PUB on me…no, wait…have a few on Marty Moon. (Reading that interview, I think Marty had a few at PUB.) I was hoping for a big comic strip crossover party like Dagwood and Blondie had for their anniversary.

    Saturday’s panel…the…gayest…ever…

I thought the big galoot in panel one was Kaz at first, then I realized it was Jeff whatshisname representin’ the Ramones.

Glad to see that Kaz has his earrings on in honor of the 50th anniversary.

  2. I never realized that old-tyme Gil was such a hunk. Love the little stars that follow him around.

  3. The Detroit Free Press prints the most newsworthy things. I love my local paper.

  4. I concur with Regina on the level of gayness in Saturday’s strip. “Did you really want to go running with Stacie? She’s a cootie-infested GIRL.” And there’s nothing better than a lighthearted bitch slap between guys. Guy friends. Just friends. You know.

  5. From the press release for “Tales from the Bucket”: …Gil’s bungled marriage proposal to actress Holly Dobbs AND Also included are four summer stories as well as a section reprinting Mr. Berrill’s teen advice strip, Teen Wise, that ran from 1966-76.

    Oh, I’m all over that.

Is that Max Headroom in the role of Jeff Ponczak?

I don’t get the classic Gil hairdo. It has a flattop and yet it’s long and feathered on the side (plus it looks a little long in the back). It’s some sort of proto-mullet, which I don’t think ever existed in nature. Maybe it’s supposed to be a pompadour in the front, but the drawing suggest that the hair growing right at the hairline is pretty short, but there’s a whole lot of it piled on top. I just don’t get it.

  6. Happy Anniversary, Gil! I won’t even snark at ya today.

I will snark at Misshapen Stacie, though. Y’all know I’d rather see giant freak hands any day than those short, stub-ended arms…creepy!

  7. Happy 50th, Gil! Awesome hair!

And you can’t blame Matt Murdock for wearing that awful Ramones shirt. He’s blind! (Although I imagine that, in Heaven, the Ramones are enjoying that crazy non-hip style in a totally ironic way. Those guys were awesome like that.)

*heads over to the Freep to read the Gil interview, heart swelling with some old MoTown pride*

  8. No, Gil, thank YOU!

  9. Gil Thorp and Brenda Starr should hook up. They’re about the same age and it would be hilarious.

It’s not like what’s-her-name is that interesting, anyway.

  10. Old school Gil with his Chuck Connors hair! Yesss!

Check out that awkward basketball pose in frame 2. Is he trying to crush the ball?

  11. A completely sincere, non-sarcastic Happy 50th to Gil Thorp today. I’ll admit that I don’t know the average lifespan of a newspaper comic, but making it 50 years is pretty impressive, methinks.

Hey Jason, is another season of Football Outsiders coming this year? I just read through the archives…funny stuff.

    Comment by Emptyeye — September 8, 2008 @ 11:35 am

  12. And a cold one for another 50 years, but only if TWIM is right along side!

    Comment by Daily Comics Reviewer — September 8, 2008 @ 11:50 am

  13. Non-snark: Here’s to you Coach. For being at least 72 you look ‘fabolus’. Hope you enjoy 50 more and that at least one of your teams win a championship.
Snark: I’m gonna have a cold one for you… cold shower that is… all these mano a mano overtones are exciting the latency in me.
Say you geriatric pile o’carbon, the ’50’s are way over; [with credit to the late Sam Kinnison] it’s time to crawl in the box.
Parting remark: GT without TWIM is like a day without hydrogen fusion radiation.

  14. Great interview with Marty Moon. Bubba Joe “Do you like Tex-Mex” Tillwell! That’s old school for me.

  15. So, anyone else suspect that in celebration of 50 years, we’re going to see a big year from the Milford teams? I’m predicting two championships, minimum.

  16. Is it just me, or wasn’t the school paper called the Milford Star last year, not the Trumpet?

    Happy Birthday, Gil!

I wouldn’t bet a whole lot on Star, but Trumpet did not sound right.
Maybe it’s the literary magazine that folds after the first or second issue.

  18. The Milford town newspaper is called the Star. The Milford High School newspaper is called the Trumpet.

  19. […] noticed, nothing really happened today. You might have thought that Jeff is sporting another Ramones t-shirt, but in actuality I figure it probably says “I Moon […]
