There’s a hole in the Bucket

OK, so we’ve reached that terribly dull lull in the story arc, after all the characters have been introduced, but before wacky insane things start happening. So no need to discuss any dialogue today. Fortunately, Chief Whigham has spiced things up a bit  with some wacky artwork!

Panel 1: Why does the attractive polka-dot straw chick just get a cameo? More straw girl, please! Also note that today’s Bucket patrons include Matt the Hatt and Stormy Hicks in his plaid lumberjack outfit. (No doubt he was all but forced to go here.) But maybe Stormy knew why not to eat at the Bucket by his own free will…the building is collapsing! (Get out, polka-dot straw girl!)

Panel 2: This panel has been brought to you by The 1980’s Jacket Emporium, featuring the Marty McFly and the Michael Jackson!

Panel 3: Are they playing ball in front of a Mondrian painting? (Wow an art reference? I really got nothin’…)

Remember, if you haven’t already, make your nominations for the best and worst panels of 2008. One of these days, I’ll possibly do something with this information…and the more work you all do, the less I have to!

  1. Is there supposed to be a time lapse between panel 2 and panel 3? I mean, did the Sunday dinner thing already happen and now Brenda and Elf Child are discussing how it got Bryce off the couch and into boys’ basketball…possibly because Bryce discovered Dylan’s hotness? No? Ah, well, it will all become clear someday, I suppose. For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then we shall see face to face…

  2. I like Elf girl’s fused together fingers as well as Brenda’s freak hand that’s glued to the basketball.

Polka Dot girl is the most attractive Whigham creations we’ve seen so far…she’s nothing like the generic crap he usually draws. Did Chief Whigham step out of PUB and have a moment of artistic clarity? Hatt doesn’t seem to care, because he fell fast asleep in the corner and is depressed over his life mate Sacko not joining him. Perhaps he can hook up with Stormy.

  3. Weird: Brenda has a normal hand but a freak lower lip.

  4. Polka-Dot Straw Girl is living (well, not living, I guess) proof that Chief Whigham can draw cute girls with decent racks. However, he balances that out in panel 3 with the most heinous depiction of Brenda yet. Yikes.

  5. Is Brenda free to invite strangers over for Sunday dinner without clearing it with her mother?
Do Brenda and Bryce even have living parents in the vicinity?
Why can’t Dylan manage to meet Bryce during the school day?
Why would Bryce even want to meet some dirtbag his sister brings home unless it’s to punch im in the face?

  6. P1: Unbelievable! Another smidgen of continuity! Hatt at The Bucket still without his squeeze box.

P2: The part of Dylan Bauza/Bozo was played by Richard Boone (Have Gun Will Travel et al].

P3: Brenda and Bryce’s parents work with Curley Horse’s father… they moved to Milford when they heard nosy neighbors and radio announcers will cover for their absence. No wonder Bryce is so down… he’s been abandoned!

  7. Here’s a nomination- I nominate “Could someone kindly return my pants?” for Longest-Running Random Amusing Panel o’ the Moment of the year. I know how much you love pants, so it’s ok. But it’s almost time for something new…

  8. There’s a significant Hotness Gap between the fall and winter romance plotlines — and a cameo by Polka Dot Straw Girl and her externally-worn bra doesn’t make up for it. In the fall, we had Trisha Jones crawling all over Sackodog at every opportunity. Now, we’ve got Brenda taking Dylan on a virginal trip to the Bucket, and asking him over for Sunday dinner with the folks. Shouldn’t there be some gettin’ busy in the back of the bus in here somewhere?

I love Polka Dot Straw Girl too, but my favorite cameo of the day is Film Noir Guy in the background of panel 1. Apparently he oozed right out of a John Garfield movie and into Milford’s teen hangout. Doing surveillance on potential armed robber Dylan Bauza, perhaps?

  9. John Garfield! Everybody assumes the hatted figure in panel one is Matt of the Healthy Heart, but johnw may be right– it may be a detective straight out of “Force of Evil.” The polka dot straw girl is cool, it’s true, but it’s also true that just as in the case of the even more cool Trisha, the enabler of Sacko, she will probably never be seen again.

Lots of scenes in The Bucket lately, you notice? It’s becoming Milford’s answer to Rick’s Cafe Americain…

  10. Nomination for Worst of 2008: Panel 2, Tuesday March 18. Kaz wouldn’t even look like that in Apartment 3-G! It’s an abomination! A travesty of a sham!

For Best of 2008, how about Panel 2, Wednesday February 6, “Kid Stuck In Tree”? I mean, it was a tough year.
