Scoring Coke With Gil

The only observation I can make about today’s offering is that this must be the first time we’ve seen Janet’s Diner. Maybe it’s Janet’s Dine n’ Dash, where they actually dare you to skip out on the check to spice things up. Oh wait, they have APPLE PIE? No, that’s enough excitement. Who wouldn’t want to choose Milford from among the contenders vying for True Standish’s commitment?

As far as the freeway goes, True, Milford doesn’t have one, at least not one that Gil has ever used. Gil always takes (wait for it…) the High Road. Buy him a Coke and he’ll tell you all about it.

  1. Who’s the old lady Gil is steadying with his hand in panel 2? How shameful to be so hammered at 2:00 in the afternoon ! Looks like a scene out of the movie Barfly. Have these writers no originality?!

  2. Gil’s face in panel 3: frozen grin, worried eyes, creased brow. He’s thinking to himself, “Oh Lord, if this kid actually chooses Milford, they’ll expect me to win! How’m I gonna get out of this? … I know! I’ll dump my flask into my Coke and then switch glasses! The kid’ll get hammered and do something stupid, and the pressure will be off.

“Hey, kid, look over there! Is that Johnny Manziel?”

  3. No wonder Tod Andrews is always getting to Scotland afore Gil…

  4. P3 sign, below “Apple Pie”:

    Today’s Special:
    Chiggers Stew
    “It’s Mite-y Good!”

  5. The “et’s” in Janet’s Diner is indistinct; if it was Janie’s Diner I had a whole “Janie’s Cryin’: riff ready for it. Instead I’m left to parody “Tom’s Diner” which I don’t think I have time for today.

  6. Gil can’t bribe a potential player, but he can accept a bribe.

  7. Welp, think we’re seeing it. True will enroll at Milford: on top of the subliminal points from Saturday, we now have apple pie (has mom not been mentioned, or have I been inattentive?) and Gil will be stuck with the consequences. True and False have in effect landed from a spaceship: the mention of freeways suggests “the coast” is California. Wonder where Mfnrd is located this time?

  8. […] first glance yesterday I thought we’d returned to Janet’s Diner for another opportunity to riff on Suzanne Vega. Then I realized the two venues don’t look […]
