Is This Actually Happening?

The pacing of the championship game so far has been quite enjoyable. I will do my snarky duties by pointing out that the block in panel three is a bit spatially disorienting but other than that, this is just good football action. Continuing to refrain from the ironic derision that I usually heap on this strip, I will confess to being genuinely curious as to the resolution. To my mind, this one could still go either way and that, my friends, is the kind of thing that makes for an enjoyable story.

Go Milford!

  2. Penalty! And Twue cripples his shoulder! Jerkrod has to QB – can Millford go 8 yards to win? No!

  3. Holy Toledo! It took literally minutes to tease out, but I think I’m seeing J-Rod cutting between True’s legs! Not unlike what a pair of competent Shriners might do.

  5. In the absence of what would’ve been my 40-plus-year-old Tudor Electric Football players, I’ve substituted some of my son’s Lego minifigures (yes, I’m working from home today) in an effort to understand the dynamics of this play. (I’m also looking at that 2007 Fiesta Bowl final play for reference.) I’m having a real hard time of it. I can only visualize it if Stowe’s coming from the far side, Hale is taking his sweet time getting to the outside, and True rapidly pirouettes, well, not unlike an electric football player spinning in a circle. Some suspension of disbelief is in order, but it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility.

Has Marty felt a sharp pain in his neck yet?

  6. Twue damages his shoulder enough to end his playing days (freeing him to plot and plan at Miami, Ohio), and Jerkoo becomes one and only QB.

  7. Ah, but True is hitting the linebacker with his LEFT shoulder.

I was a little confused myself– at first I thought we had unrealistic action in order to avoid what looks likely in P2, that True would have to clip #50– but now I think maybe we have a moving point of view. P1 is as seen from behind the left side of Mfnrd’s line, P2 from behind the left side of the opponent’s line, and the final panel from over center, as Jarrod cuts behind True’s block to turn straight downfield. The question is what’s in those remaining four yards and whether Jarrod can do anything about it. Given the time dilation (after compressing the earlier parts of the state tournament into about six panels) I think we have another day of football action before we know the outcome.

Who would have thought a bunch of cynics like us would get all cranked up over this game? Go Mfnrd!

  9. Go Comics will post the next installment in less than one hour (midnight). I am actually considering staying up to see what happens!

  10. Usually the comic strip is posted about 1:30 a.m. Eastern time (I’m traveling in Europe; I don’t stay up that late!). Looking forward to the dramatic conclusion!
