Basking in the Afterglow

It looks like we missed the parade. We do get a nice view of the state championship trophy, which is easily the weirdest looking thing we’ve seen here in a while. The state chooses to remain anonymous and has also declined to personalize the trophy in any way. At least they put the year on it.

What does this thing remind you of?

Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t throw in another plug for the Commemorative T-Shirt available now here. Thank you to G-Man for setting that up.

  1. It takes the large color version of the trophy to appreciate the golden shower of glory whole.

  2. In today’s strip, we learn that briefly mentioning a parade is a whole lot easier than drawing one.

As for that thick, turgid, obscene “trophy” (right down to the glistening droplet on its tip), I think somebody at the state high school association has a deep and abiding hatred for Milford, and this trophy is his revenge. “We’ll give them the most outrageously phallic thing in the trophy catalog, and they’ll have no choice but to display it proudly.”

  3. Also, I like the fact that the girl in panel 3 is pointing at the trophy and smirking. From this day forward, no student will be able to walk by the trophy case without sniggering loudly.

  4. I think the trophy’s a model of Marty’s basement starship. Some day, he’ll get off this rock if he can just stop speaking in sports metaphors with his primary human contact, Gil.

  5. A trophy with not one, but TWO, New Mexico flag Zia sun symbols? Amazing.

  6. It’s a melting wax replica of the Lombardi Trophy with a gumball helmet at its base. That, or one of those old Hamilton Beach milkshake blenders.

  7. I’m with Dood here. We’re seeing Herr Moon’s drool glistening on said bright shiny object. I especially appreciate the cut-n-paste inscription loving rendered at the object’s base. Is that the Broadway font?

  8. And, if we take P2 completely out of context…

  9. It looks like they took the stand from one of my old Revell model airplanes and stuck a 3-year-old’s toy football onto it. No idea where they got that helmet thingy. Did they consider simply drawing a normal trophy?

  10. A question comes to mind: In the course of celebrating, how many players kissed the trophy?

    I'm hungry for Cheerios.

  11. Hahahaha…. Fantastic, Ned.

  12. Hasn’t taken us long to return to snark and snipe, has it? I know the strips are drawn weeks ahead of publication, otherwise I’d say that that trophy was deliberate encouragement for us to return to normal. OK, bring on basketball, and the kid who wants to be president campaigning to be captain.

  13. Boy that is one mighty ugly trophy! Looks like someone just threw on every random piece of junk they could on it.

    Comment by Bobby Joe — December 15, 2014 @ 2:43 pm

  14. Can we nominate the “trophy,” such as it is, to the pantheon of mysterious objects?

    Comment by Dood — December 15, 2014 @ 3:48 pm

  15. Dood, i think the Zia sun symbols alone make that nomination inevitable. This may be a little off topic, but the question we could return to if the basketball plot is really bad (boy designer disrupts the season by campaigning to put the players in spandex) is “Why are sports trophies almost automatically ugly or stupid looking? The golfer above seems very pleased with her multi-purpose trophy, but too many are like the America’s Cup, which has no bottom and thus cannot even be used to pour celebratory drinks at the banquet.

  16. There are things afoot, Dood. Maybe big, maybe small. However, you will note that the trophy is now in the pantheon (not that I had anything to do with it). One thing I can promise you is that sometime before the heat death of the universe, we will be adding a category for Marjie Ducey so that, at least going forward, you’ll be able to find strips with her in them.

  17. Whoops, that should give you an idea of how this will proceed, you will notice that this strip featuring the trophy is now in the random amusing panel o’ the Moment…

  18. […] Ah, the playdowns!™ Remember those? Who knows what dreams may come true? […]
