Bacon The Badger

One parental debriefing transitions into another for Gil. Not surprisingly, Mrs. Howry needs a little sarcastic Gil Thorp reality check, for she is as slow on the uptake as the Bacon’s. Poor Gil is forever tasked with coaching children of blowhards, morally compromised dimwits, rage-oholics, and other various “Milford Idiots”.

Sure, I would give parents called before a school official a little leeway, as they are processing new information about their children, but Gil has to accelerate things and go straight to pontification. After all, two parent conferences in one day?? No, no, no, a packed schedule like that leaves no time for compassion!

  1. Gil KARATE CHOPS her reasoning in panel 3. Otherwise, swift justice after a typically Thorpian season of inaction/absence. Looks like ol’ Gil found a way to sabotage his team’s chances at the playdowns, plus extra bonus: he rids himself of the most annoying student in the history of Milford.

  2. “No, Mrs. Howry. That’s not all he did. He stopped the off-label aspirin supply so Max would play badly, and he did that to try to impress a girl. It cost us two games … at least, that’s what someone told me. I haven’t been to a game or a practice in a month or so. And one other thing he did …”
    “What did he do?”
“He’s been telling the other kids to call him ‘Heisenberg'”.

  4. Gildeau is waxing sanctimonious, sitting behind a big desk with those prairie windows in the background. Most schools have a student handbook which spells out behavior rules & regulations, along with penalties for non compliance. At MHS, it’s make up the rules as you go along. IMHO Bobby taught Max a lesson, and how did he violate school rules???

  5. In most jurisdictions, it is a policy violation for a student to give another student even a non-prescription drug, as they too can be abused. Thus Bobby may be jacked up for that. But the main reason he will be on blocks (“Clean out your locker, asshole”) is his manipulation of Max, and by extension, the team. He has also subverted the coaches, and I doubt we will ever see him near a team of any kind again. Unlike Max, he cannot claim stupidity as an excuse.

  6. John S., that doesn’t look like a karate chop as much as a slap. All that’s missing as Gil backhands Howry Mater’s protest into the dirt is a Dr. Doom-esque ‘BAH!’.

Of course one’s mileage will vary.

  7. I saw a pocket protector full of pens at first glance, and I was really digging P3’s “new Gil”. Of course, since he was MIA for several weeks this winter, any Gil is still “new Gil”.

Alas, it is but a cup ‘o pens. Or crayons – hard to tell otherwise.
