Milford @ Ballard: Judgment Day

April 30, 2015

Holy crap. Any commentary I might have today would be overshadowed by the fact that, in the Thorpiverse, Skynet is real.

None of the details of this game – the wacky bounces; the BONK! off the Skynet billboard; Marty’s blown-up photos of a view from a press box tacked to his basement wall; his headset made out of my old Grado Labs headphones, a ping-pong ball and a coat hanger; a stolen base by Max Ortiz, consistent with his characterization as speedy; the idea that a five-run top of the first constitutes a “rally”; the distinct possibility that True Standish coughs up that five-run lead later in the game – none of this amounts to a hill of beans in the context of a society under imminent threat of termination at the direction of an overarching, self-aware artificial intelligence bent on destroying the human race.

Their only hope is that Kyle Reese and John Connor are on the Ballard roster.

  1. Not that Whigham has never gotten perspective wrong before, but is that supposed to be a baseball? I think if we got a closeup look, it’d have “Titleist” printed on the cover.

Also, I love the half-assed effort by the Ballard outfielders. They appear to have been slowly jogging in circles while the ball fell slowly to earth, and seem unconcerned with picking up the ball and getting it back into the infield. Connor Lalonde ought to be rounding first and steaming into second by now.

  2. I like how Skynet may be able to control the world, but still feels the need to advertise on a high school baseball field.

  3. No wonder Skynet became self-aware and turned on humans, we kept pelting them with baseballs. Looks like Ballard also has sold outfield wall signage to the local JCC and to a children’s drawing of a sailboat.

  4. I agree with Moon, at least Skynet gives a crap about Kaye Ballard High School sports. Looks like Marty’s in pain having to call all this positive Milford baseball action. Either that, or Skynet’s delivering shocks through his seat in the pressbox.

  5. I think the OF in panel 1 is using Skynet sign as a pitch back to warm up between innings. He doesn’t play well with others.

  6. I’m thinking Marjie Ducey is the key to stopping Skynet’s plans for high school baseball sponsorship domination. What if Mr. Bakst or Lanny Penn was a terminator?
