This Week in Milford

Hey, I went to Eastern Illinois! The NFL never found me! (But it found someone else)

More camp tripe, as True and Rodney confer on a possible future in the pros and Rodney relaxes True by assuring him that yes, if your good enough, the pros will find you. True. But I wouldnt bet my life on it, as the biggest jump is between college and the pros, and there’s only about 64 jobs available behind center. Unless you want to hold a clipboard. Even the chemistry wonk can do that.

Storytime: Yes I went to Eastern Illinois for 2 years, before academic records determined that I was not allowed to continue. But in the summer of ’83 I met a guy in my dorm on the same floor who I found out was going to be the Panthers next starting quarterback. He actually cooked hamburgers for me in his room with his portable grill. You may have heard of him-  Sean Payton. After a stint as a replacement player he took the Saints head coaching job and won a Super Bowl, every football  players dream. Small world – I never forgot our brief friendship before our lives headed in separate directions. So a little parallel to True and Rodney, as who knows which one of the 2 will wind up holding the Lombardi Trophy., and the other watching him from afar on TV and remembering the old days.

  1. help, I’ve been out of the loop. So we’re at Camp #2 now, which appears to be a day-camp? Still humming my R.E.M. faves, so I got that goin’ for me. Which is nice.

  2. Yep, camp 2. Seems they’d rather be with their high school teams but they’re being “tortured” by doing what the man expects them to do .
I recently learned that my favorite band Local H got their name from 2 REM songs. Oddfellows Local 151 and Swan Swan H. Other than that I have no use for REM. But I’m in minority I suppose. They’re pretty popular.
And how bout EIU? The cradle of QB’s. A high school teamate of mine who was a QB went there about the same time Payton would’ve been there .

  3. The football legacy of Eastern Illinois suggest that there’s something in the water in Charleston. Indeed, almost of all the EIU alums I have come across in my life, with the possible exception of Jim Edgar*, have been quite impressive people.

    * Really not trying to start a political fight on the TWIM message board. I just didn’t like the guy.

  4. In the interest of starting a complete flaming shitstorm on the TWIM message board, I had to do some research on said Jim Edgar*. Despite his professed enthusiasm for L. Ron Hubbard, even dedicating 3/13/91 as LRH Day in Illinois, I… just… can’t get that worked up about the dude. Now, if you want to flame about Blago or Gov. Grumpy Ryan, I’m your huckleberry.

  5. George Ryan. Flame indeed. Like the mini van that caught fire because he gave a liscence to an unqualified trucker. Oh, but he emptied death row. As if that’s a good thing. I shouldn’t be such a downer on Saturday night. Drink up!
