Bang and Blame

A quick cut from Fort Worth to Orlando – I’m guessing the random palm trees are shorthand for “We’re not in Texas anymore” – and we learn why Rodney Curtis is not also a basketball prospect.

Rodney’s uncle (who appears to have this Milford High staffer for a face model) trots out the now tiresome “branding” angle, quickly becoming a staple of every Gil Thorp arc. Who’s this magical “we” he’s talking about? Does “bang for your brand” translate into “anywhere between $100,000 and $180,000”?

The easy prediction is that Rodney listens to Uncle Bighead there and delays his announcement long enough that his school of choice pulls its offer before he can state his intent. If that leads to a falling out with his family and a Three’s Company scenario with Rodney, Rey and True all at Miami of Ohio, so much the better. More likely is that Rodney follows True’s lead and his own heart and does what he wants, when he wants.

  1. I can’t keep track of these characters. I thought Uncle Bighead was Sedrick. Who cares. This whole recruiting story is just a cover up of the multiple DUI’s Gil got this summer. Maybe we’ll learn more when they are back in school and Gil’s smashed Ford LTD has a Gil’s Story sign on it.

  2. I agree. Uncle Bighead maybe Sedrick’s unknown father. That would make for an interesting storyline. More so than the one we have here.

  3. So Rodney flew from Orlando to Ft. Worth, spent five minutes on campus, was approached by a student, panicked and ran, and flew back to Orlando. Not the wisest use of dad’s money.
Rubin has spent the summer showing us the insanity of adults obsessed with the college decisions of 17-year-old football players. So what does he do this late August Saturday? He tantalizes us by withholding the college decision of a comic strip 17-year-old football player, hoping that we’ve developed, if not an obsession, at least an irrational interest. We’ll play along and check every day next week until he finally reveals the Rodney Curtis Jackpot Winner … Alabama? Michigan State? University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople?
