THAT’S Where I Know Her From!

Filed under: Marty Moon — nedryerson @ 4:14 am

“Icebreakers”? “Turnabout”? Those sound like the generic, fake movie titles they would use on Seinfeld. You may also know Holly Dobbs from memorable roles in “Firestorm” and “Death Blow”. (Her IMDB entry lists a few other films: “Stormfront”, “Watchtower”, “Hair Trigger”, “Three Point Turn”, “Sidesaddle”, and “Time Signature”)

Of course, she’s best remembered as Carter S. Carter….
Wait, what? Nosy neighbor on a sitcom?! Like Gladys Kravitz from Bewitched? Best remembered? So Holly Dobbs has, like, Norman Fell level of celebrity wattage?

I wonder what “Room 4 Rent” was like? Every week, different people would come to look at the room to rent and nosy neighbor, Carter S. Carter, would butt in and cause a scene. The Room would stay vacant until the next week. How many seasons of “Room 4 Rent” aired? (Am I remembering this correctly? Does anybody else remember any more details of this memorable television show?)

  1. Rubin’s probably been holding on to that “Welcome Back, Kotter” groan-inducing reference since he took over the strip, waiting for just the spot to insert it. He could have waited indefinitely.
Sounds like Holly’s work life has been just as exciting and rewarding as Marty’s. I’m sure she was on an episode of “Love Boat” or “Love American Style” … or, possibly, “Hollywood Squares”, which was kind of a long-running hospice for dying careers.

  2. I’m picturing Room 4 Rent as a kind of wannabe Threes Company where 4 people are living in an apartment that only 2 are supposed to be living in. The idiot landlord believes that he’s renting to one set of 2 of the four while various other neighbors believe it to be different sets of 2 of the 4, requiring a lot of hijinks to keep stories straight. Carter S. Carter is the suspicious busybody who almost catches the 4, but narrowly misses finding proof.

    Huh… Hey, remember when sports?

  3. Remember when Holly kissed Nipsey Russell on Match Game? It was the first televised interracial kiss. So scandalous !

  4. The “nosy neighbor” part is usually played by an older actress. Did Holly completely skip the “ingenue” portion of her career?

  5. Jive – which Match Game?

At the ball game yesterday, one of the between-inning contests was, “Name as many game shows in 30 seconds”. Joe Mauer only got 4 BTW.

I sat there thinking that my answers: Match Game 73; MatchGame 74 and so on up to Match Game 79, and then Match Game PM would have dominated the contest. That, and The Gong Show of course.

  6. Whatever iteration of “Match Game”, Gene Rayburn always had a super-skinny microphone.

  7. Firestorm? Was she Howie Long’s love interest? I’ll have to rewatch that one.

  8. Match Game 75 I think. That same episode, Charles Nelson Reilly got a bit jealous. He also kissed Nipsey Russell.

  9. Minor observation, but is there some ‘Exploding Fern Syndrome’ in lower right of P2?

  10. Are they sharing a microphone in panel 1? Either WDIG is as terminally cheap as your average tank-town AM station, or this is Marty’s subtle way of putting the moves on. Too bad she’ll smell the liquor on his breath.

  11. Of course she got a lot of attention for her many nude scenes in “Rochelle, Rochelle.”

  12. […] a character that last appeared in your strip during the Johnson Administration while creating a Kathy Griffin-like resume for her, you’d think you could remember the name of a public access cable TV show you created […]
