You Farging Bastrops!

Filed under: football, Gil Thorp, Marty Moon — teenchy @ 8:47 am

Yesterday’s strip should’ve ended with an ellipsis… but without one Gil gives Tricky enough of a sound bite to use against him… or give to Marty via Holly to use against him. Gil then leads the troops in some sort of Roman salute. “Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose!”

What a travel budget for these football powerhouses. A Texas team whips up on a Nebraska team then goes home to host Milford. Wonder if the Welcome Back Carter budget included shipping Marty’s crate to Texas or if he’s having to recreate the game from the basement.

  1. Tricky Dick Travolta will learn his lesson soon enough: Gil Thorp is way, waaaaay too dull to be featured on a reality TV show.

  2. Ah, yes, Bastrop. Amongst the towns between Houston and Austin, it is one of them. They’ve got a Buc-ee’s there if that’s your thing. The Lost Pines resort is also reasonably nice. I went once for a day conference and can report that the a la carte breakfast was very good. Sure, there can be some unpleasantness here and there but that sort of thing can happen in just about any little Texas town.

Don’t get me started on Voter ID laws and recent experiences I had at the Texas equivalent of the DMV.

  4. I have decided to treat this plot the way I would Rip Van Winkle, or the story that Columbus’s contemporaries thought the earth was flat. Horseshit, in other words, but entertaining horseshit. From a legal standpoint the story is OOQ (out of the question.)

BUT~ Here we have a classic GT set-up: meddlesome outsiders misrepresent what Gil has said to the players, his old rivalry with Marty Moonstruck over Holly Wood gets dredged up in the public eye (as does Marty’s binge drinking) and as we often say in Mfnrd… hilarity ensues! I admit I am holding out for the final blow to be delivered by either Herk the Mauler or Molly Kinsella (in a cardboard bikini.)

Where, I am wondering, is False? Much of our attention in the summer was directed to his steering True’s college choice; that story seems to have disappeared.

  5. The contrast between Gil’s heroic pose in P2, and the jackass in the box in P3… fantastic. Has Marty ever been held so low?

  6. And P2 is now in the running for the front of the 2016 championship t shirt.

  7. […] of which… Haven’t we seen panel three before? For that matter, I’m not sure what to make of the fact that Gil’s speech is punctuated […]
