This Week in Milford

I’m Surprised It Doesn’t Say “Free Candy”

I think we can see where this is going: Alan lets Dor(k)y pitch his idea on camera to pad out this sinking ship of a reality show. By missing practice, Dor(k)y gets himself benched. Gil subs in an even more inexperienced O-lineman (maybe Max Bacon, now bulked up on Flintstones Vitamins) whose incompetence leads to Milford failure on the gridiron. True Standish (remember how long he carried this strip, kids?) gets injured and loses his meal ticket. Alan, Holly and the Welcome Back, Carter crew rip the identifying vinyl off their van and slink back to Hollywood, their careers as ruined as Milford’s football season. Gil and Mimi have drunken, angry makeup sex; Marty drinks alone; then on to basketball.

As stupid as this fall arc has been – as much as Rubin has wasted the opportunity to develop a real plot around a championship team trying to defend its title – we can at least be thankful that Gil Thorp hasn’t deteriorated into the illegible, incoherent mess Apartment 3-G has become in its final days.

Two minor sartorial items of note: Breck’s post-practice helmet head is worthy of the Pantheon of Hair. We knew Alan had to send the stanky Travolta suit to the cleaners eventually, but who knew he got his backup outfit from Napoleon Dynamite?

  1. That’s one teeny-tiny van. My small-market TV news station would scoff at it.

  2. Interesting, John. I think it’s a not terrible rendering of a commercial van, but can’t decide if it’s supposed to be a Ford Transit or a Ram Promaster. This is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night.

On another note, as a person who has had the very choice opportunity to stay in many, many chain hotels, I was curious to find out which brand’s lobby was supposedly depicted yesterday. So, you can imagine my disappointment to find out that, of course, the main hotel in Mnford is Hotel. It makes me wonder if Pub is Hotel’s adjacent bar/restaurant concept.

  3. timbuys, yes. And Hotel serves Beer in Bar. No Boom Boom Room in this tank town, no sir. And no Stella
