Can You Teach A High Horse To Read?

In case you hadn’t heard, it’s pretty rough out there for an aging actress. Holly Dobbs has faced all sorts of indignities since she went out to La La Land and every year it gets worse. She even failed to get parts conceived for her “type”!

Hold up there, Holly. You’re saying you, Holly Dobbs, represent (or did at once, at least) a type, a recognized category of performer, one specifically signified by your own name? Nobody’s gonna buy that. If you have a type, it’s the Norma Desmond type, and it’s not a characterization based on your looks or screen presence, but on the nature of your delusions.

I’m ready for my close-up, non-union, sub-contracted cameraman.

  1. Notice the signs of a crowd gathering in p3. This conflict is about to escalate.

  2. Cat fight! Get on your broom Holly and leave town. You think a reality show set in a Tanktown High school is going to revive your failing “career”.

  3. Panel 3 is a great bit of cartooning. Yes, I’m still wondering what happened to football season, but it is only fair I give kudos too when they’re deserved.

  4. Hey, Mimi: Stop ragging on Holly and go ask the school board why they let this circus into your school.

  5. John S, I don’t think Mimi talked to anybody about this nonsense, but Gil did object to Dr Pearl, who ordered him to cooperate and made clear no staff member could sit this out. The point remains, though, that this story could only take place in an alternate universe. Sometimes the disconnection from reality that is Mfnrd is fun, but this time it makes me feel I have been taken hostage by lunatics. I try not to read or post, but morbid fascination keeps me coming back.

  6. “morbid fascination keeps me coming back”…Well put vaganova… I hope you do not mind my adding this expression to my repertoire of witticisms

  7. A bloke takes a few days off from the interwebs, family time and all that, and turns out: I missed a ton of fun!
Long-time-lurker Vagrant A made a surprise appearance (is that like Kid A by Radiohead?)
Holly Dobbs is aging before mine very eyes in P2 today; looking more and more like Chrissie Hynde in each panel.
Who knew the Muckford teachers’ contract has a mandatory retirement age of… 80?

And the coup de grâce for the missing Thorp chillens – no Happy Thanksgiving panel. At. All.

  8. I thank g2design for the shout-out, and encouraged by it, wish to put things in a nutshell.

Dear Whigrub, now hear this, for future reference, and based on decades of experience both as a performer and as a public school teacher:

Stills, video, or sound recordings of actual persons can only be presented for commercial purposes with the written permission of the subject.

Minors, by definition, cannot enter into such a contract unassisted, and their parents cannot sign away their rights against their wishes.

Thus the depiction presented in GT is out of the question. Further digressions from reality: Gil wants them to “shut that thing off while it’s still in one piece?” Shut it off, or face a no-win lawsuit– Gil has not consented to being filmed but has actively resisted it the entire time. The tomfoolery of making Gil appear to second guess his marriage? Six figure damages for Gil and Mimi for mental anguish, harm to professional reputation, etc.

Even if the present “reality show” could be filmed legally– which it could not– no school would agree to it. The number of potential lawsuits is a multiple of the number of people involved, and schools are notoriously averse to suits. They run on taxpayer money, and dread blowing it trying to defend the indefensible.

    That is all.
