By George, I Think She’s Got It!

Filed under: Gil Thorp, Kenzie Hanley — nedryerson @ 3:31 am

It’s okay everyone! Kenzie got it! Gil’s strange suggestion wasn’t taken literally (which we all agreed was a risk an adult in his position doesn’t take). Kenzie is sharp. She gets it. Be yourself. Don’t listen to what these other idiots say because they’re all clueless and they spread dumb chatter and do things like wrapping themselves in surgical gauze for basketball games. There ya go. Teenage drama is dumb and once a sharp cookie like Coach Thorp engages you in a two minute weight room Socratic dialogue, you can snap yourself right out of your dumb funk and get on with life! Easy peasy!

Okay, let’s go win that championship (or whatever)!

  1. “Otherwise, I was about to report your ass to Principal Pearl.”

  2. Wow ! I knew this was gonna be dumb today but not that dumb. Here’s a dumb story from my weight lifting days. A friend of mine was bench pressing with radio on AM station. There was much static due to storm. Weightlifting meatheads told him to take it easy and not exert himself. He wasn’t exerting himself and was puzzled by their concern. Turns out they thought static from radio was him farting because of exertion. Good stuff!

  3. Disappointed that K-Z doesn’t take the bait in P1. Straight-man Gil asks *the* leading question of all time. “Why don’t I grow out and wear my hair like your wife?” Geez, what a set-up. And there was plenty of head space in P2 for an extended riff on that topic.

Instead, we settle for Popeye; “I yam what I yam and tha’s all what I yam.”

  4. The story which seems to have gone off the rails really has not– I just misunderstood it. The germ is Kenzie’s discomfort, her tendency to quickly lose confidence, as she did when “Bobby” twitted Maxwell and Kenzie about being a couple, and reinforced by Kenzie’s reminding us recently how long it took her to accept herself. Gil’s overture may be clumsy by many standards (“Would you like to do a dumbbell workout with a bottle of Mazola?”) but in Mfnrd terms it may be right. Besides, Gil is always right, right? Look for Kenzie to welcome Maxwell back and to go on to the playouts. We can always hope she decks somebody in the process even though that’s not going to happen in the denouement. At least it ought to be the denouement:, since schools are starting spring sports. But in Mfnrd we probably have another three weeks of basketball.
