Playdowns? Playdowns!

I am struggling to understand what is going on in panel one. Part of me wants to recast it as some kind of Mexican standoff… but, nowadays, I can’t decide who’d be the Good or the Bad. Marty is obviously the Ugly.

Turning that dubious conundrum aside, I’ll be curious as to which Parkland they’re playing. Regardless, it seems obvious what is coming next. Kenzie laying the smack down as only she can.

  1. You know what this strip needs? A beret for Marjie! Instead, we get three people wearing jet-hover shoes in panel one.

  2. First playdown appearance for Mimi since 2007! We still had analog television broadcasts back then!

What does Mimi know about Parkland? To start with, they’re big… but they’re also green. They’re the biggest reason this year’s state tournament is considered to be a wide open field.

  3. So we’re being set up for Gil Thorp’s One-Sentence Counseling Service to work its magic, I guess.

Also, to judge by panel 3, Parkland plays in a gym with a 12-foot ceiling. Claustrophobia!

  4. Curious if we know the playdown structure, starting with whether this is “the state tournament.” I don’t remember a Parkland, thus I am guessing they are from some other part of the forest. I mean prairie. Here in New York, the state tournament began March 1st and ended the 13th, thus Mfnrd is dangerously close to being in synch with the conventional basketball season.

  5. What is Ken Brown doing on the Parkland girls team?

  6. Marjie has aged considerable since she was last seen. What’s with the Granny glasses?

  7. I am still waiting for someone with USA Rugby to discover that Kenzie is rehabbing an injury by playing high school basketball.
Gil asked Kenzie a question with an implication which could have gotten him fired, or at least divorced. Kenzie was completely oblivious to the obvious, but she did pick up on the Important Life Lesson that Gil was really trying to impart. Now she will combine her new self confidence with the fact that she is the only Mudlark with any height or muscle, and she will neutralize Parkland in the paint, allowing Leisl room to operate.
In the real world, 17-year-old girls are insecure. All of them. About everything. Kenzie’s self confidence will be gone by sunset.

  8. So P3 is during the game against Parkland? The transitions – well, they can be abrupt sometimes. If so, K-Z is getting schooled by a baller originally from District 9, by the looks of that claw.

  9. Nice catch, G2. I’ve updated the categories accordingly.

  10. Phillip, having someone from USA Rugby bust Kenzie playing basketball when she’s supposed to be resting an injury would make a good plot twist. I like Kenzie as a character, and I feel like she’s not hitting her potential in this plot. Say, was Boo Radley a senior the last time we saw her? She and Kenzie would make a real combination.
