Spring Trickles In

Filed under: baseball, softball — nedryerson @ 3:46 am

The new plot is here! The new plot is here!

Baseball! A double play combo! Why the double play combo is prominently featured again, I have no clue. As long as it’s not Foley and Jarbo!

Is that Boo Radley, working on a softball knuckleball? Welcome back, Boo. What’s up with that glove?

Panel 3 brings the mystery. Who’s drinking in Central City and why? Doesn’t this fella know that nothing good happens in Central City. Jaws get shattered, tires get slashed and drunken louts get treated pretty badly. Be careful, mystery guy.

  1. Ah, it’s a sunny spring day in Milford! The birds are singing, the young athletes are at play. Meanwhile, in Central City, people are skipping work to sit inside dingy bars and get hammered.

  2. After hearing about the knuckle sandwich, Boo counters with a knuckleball.

After his “freshen up”, our ambulance chasing Central City lawyer type is gonna get on that Winter Carnival fracas. Due diligence and all that. The statute of limitation on aggravated assault is at least five years, so what’s the rush? “OK, friend, keep ’em coming.”

  3. Milford Mudlark record Book.xlsx has awaken from a long winter to tell us that last year’s double play combination was Knox Foley and Ken Brown.
While Foley was in his third season at 2nd last year and has presumably graduated to join Alan Mayne at the Bobby Bittman School for HOWARYA, Ken Brown is still at Milford (on the basketball team) and rare is the player who plays a sport one year and then doesn’t the next.

Speaking of Ken Brown, he was one of only 17 named Characters to appear this basketball season, the fewest in any non-summer season since only 17 appeared in the 2004 baseball/softball season. Only 5 new characters were introduced, all students: Kenzie Hanley, Jadine Bynes, Maxwell’s hat-topped pal Bobby Mitchell, Tracy Schroeder “in the middle”, and Stacy DuFord.

Oh, and now for the season records.

    Milford Mudlark Boy’s Basketball 2015-16

Gil’s career record since 2001-2002 stands at 142-51 with 5 unknowns, 69-36 with 1 unknown in the Valley Conference, and 5 playdown appearances with a 12-4 record and 1 state championship. His all-time record, minus the “lost years” of 1996-2000, is 731-306 with 5 unknowns with 9 state championships. This is Gil’s 3rd consecutive season without a playdown appearance and his squad hasn’t won a playdown game since 2005-06.

    Milford Mudlark Girl’s Basketball 2015-16
8-1 with 1 unknown (5-0 in the Valley Conference)

Mimi’s record since 2004-05 stands at 71-31 with 5 unknowns, 34-17 with 2 unknowns in the Valley Conference, and 3 playdown appearances with a 2-3 record. This season marks the Lady Larks’ first playdown appearance since 2006-07, a one-and-done loss to the Ludlow Lions. The girls team has not won a playdown game since 2004-05.

Milford Mudlark Record Book.xlsx shall return in early July with exciting tales of the nearly dozen games this strip will depict and, perhaps, a recap of Gil reading his lineup card.

  4. Yes, a lot of bad things happen in Central City. For example, Bitsy Twill’s dad died of AIDS in a Central City hospital, back in the spring of 1992. Bitsy, as some of you recall, was one of the very few characters to appear in Gil Thorp year-round for a four-year period. Still remember her !

  5. Bitsy even made a return appearance a few years ago. Having married Wally Lamb, she returned to Mfnrd for the homecoming game, the night Wally burst onto the sidelines to tell Gil that he had denied Jeff Ponczak (who was 6-7) a medical clearance and that there had thus been some dirty work at the crossroads. I was thinking that the bartender looks like a classic GT villain (I think it’s the goatee and shaved head, like Ming the Merciless) and that the barfly looked like more of a sap. No idea where this is leading, only that I hope Whigrub bitsies this plot and includes not just Boo but Kenzie and Maxwell.

  6. Maybe Joe Sharkey is back on the sauce.

  7. That shortstop is really firing the ball to 2nd, like a pitcher throwing 90 mph. Not gonna work if the SS has to duck to avoid the missile.
