Checking The Boxes (Updated)

Did we mention the no-hitter? Check.

That Del has been drinking? Check.

OK, well that’s enough plot advancement for one day. Hard to imagine that after his taunting soliloquy Del isn’t going to get pinched here sooner or later… just not today.

Thanks to commenter Downpuppy for pointing out the artwork discrepancy between the B&W strip and the color strip reproduced below:

  1. Hmm, what’s that sign say? “Aldo’s Ravine, 1 Mi.” Huh, how about that?

  2. Are we seriously being led to a collision between drunk Dell & cellphone Biff? Maybe Whigrub is as tired of them as we are.

  3. Actually, True is not yet in his car– both he and Boo appear to be headed for theirs. Given that Whigrub has a history of leading up to something truly dramatic then crying “April fool!” it is also possible that Dim Del, driving at night on what may be a twisting road (note the double line) may instead go end over end into Aldo’s Ravine and be rescued by the nice young couple who inexplicably happen by in separate cars.

  4. Loving the lift kit on Del’s Chevy 4-door. Either that or he has his foot planted on the go-fast pedal.

Boo shopping at the SS Mart – Mein Gott! After all those Fries and Shakes, whatever could she need? A bottle of Pepto and a pack of Depend® Silhouettes® ?

  5. A nasty accident where someone is killed or maimed for life seems to be too dark for Whigrub. That’s more like A Funky Winkerbean kind of a thing. What ever happened to young Master Bader? Is he on a leave of absence?

  6. I don’t think this strip has killed anyone since Neil Cray, and that was the Jerry B. Jenkins era. Jenkins also killed off the jealous superintendent who hated Gil (only to admit Gil’s sainthood on his deathbed), and had a police officer shot and killed while investigating a gambling ring that had Milford players shaving points.

Holy cow, how did Gil keep his job back then?

  7. Definitely smells like an accident. But who will it be? True or Boo??

  8. I like the chalk board in the sand trap in P3. I’m sure that will be a fine teaching tool when Gil “teaches” summer camp golf. Will also please parents who tell their kids to go play by the side of the road.

  9. I like the chatty car in P3, straight from those Wallace-and-Gromit-inspired Chevron ads. I’m waiting for Del to answer her. “Take that, judge — heh-heh, yeah, you got that right, Chevy.”

  10. Panel 2 in color has Tru in the car. B & W is a completely different picture, same dialog.

    Never saw that before.

  11. Will there be an alternate ending where 3 hammered ham n eggers (Marty, Gil and Del) have a 3 way crash killing all?

    Comment by Jive Turkey — June 1, 2016 @ 12:12 pm

  12. It would be so hilarious if tomorrow’s strip starts out with “the next morning”, with True eating breakfast, Boo out for a sunrise run, and Del waking up with a hangover. Take that, Alfred Hitchcock!

    Comment by Moon Mullins — June 1, 2016 @ 12:39 pm

  13. Yeah. How on earth did Thorp keep his job through the Jenkins era? That’s a damn good question, billytheskink.
