Really, I didnt see that car on my left

Filed under: Chunky Bracelets, Gil Thorp, What the hell is going on here? — robmize2013 @ 8:15 am

Early post (for me) as I’m heading to Wrigley for a Cub game soon, so here goes – – Tires on Boo’s car appear huge for what she’s driving, no? Back tire is at least 2 inches wider then the front, not the safest way to transport milk or anything edible. Then we have the impending accident, with a car barreling toward her and she’s looking straight ahead with eyes half-closed. Nice peripheral vision for a star pitcher. Guess she can only focus on the catchers mitt straight ahead. I’ve had a couple occasions where I saw a car with its lights off coming in the other lane on a left turn, but of course stayed out of its way after glaring at it going by. Looks like she’s gonna get broadsided by … who? Del? Gil? Marty? Kaz? Marjie Ducey?? The golf course super? Cant wait til tomorrow folks!

  1. Have a great time at Wrigley, Rob. Taking in a Cubbies game is definitely on my bucket list. They had their AA Southern League farm team in Orlando in a glorified little league park called Tinker Field (named after the guy that started all those famous double plays, I guess) built in the parking lot of the Citrus Bowl, but I gotta sit in that hallowed ground. I used to go to a bar when I was in college that served quarter Heileman’s Old Style Beer when the Cubs were on. That’s what I needed, encouragement to get hammered at 3 o’clock in the afternoon! At least I lived within walking distance of the jernt. I never saw any industrial solvent salesmen in there, just other assorted day drinkers, many with Chicago ties and no shortage of salty opinions about the players the Cubs were trotting out there. Vance Law at third took a beating, (Fuckin’ Law, this old guy would mutter, a little louder every time he failed to deliver.) Andre Dawson would go in a 0-20 slump and Harry would be beside himself. It’s kinda sad that the long summers of endless boiling games are a thing of the past. Days like today are to be savored! Plus this team is good. I know. It’s June. Nuf said.

I’m leaving this plot alone, because either the thing that’s been so deliberately telegraphed is actually happening, or this is some left turn. Either way, I get it, Boo is in harm’s way, and how heavy is this gonna be?

  2. If the perspective in panel 2 is accurate (I know, that’s asking a lot), then Boo won’t get T-boned by Drunky Del. She’ll get smacked in the driver’s side rear quarter-panel. Serious crash but not fatal; Del would get the worst of it.

As for panel 3… that’s supposed to be shock and terror, but it looks more like Boo is trying out for the lead in the Milford High production of “Annie.” “Tomorrow, tomorrow, is only a car crash away.”

  3. I’m not seeing “contributory negligence” on Boo’s part. It’s an unlighted street and Dipshit Del is driving drunk without lights. We can hope he is sufficiently dazed (or ideally knocked unconscious) so he can’t turn his lights on afterward and blame the crash on “that stupid girl.” John S is right that the perspective is tricky, but this is going to be a hell of an impact and I don’t know if Jeeps have driver’s side airbags. I got t-boned in an identical situation about ten years ago and ended up with broken ribs, a stiff neck, and a face full of glass, and that was in an Accord built to passenger car safety standards, not those for “trucks.” Between Chief Lind and Judge Hiatt, Del is going to be on ice for a while, especially if Boo is seriously injured.

I never understood why “trucks” were held to lower safety standards. Couldn’t be because the trucking lobby convinced Congress their drivers’ safety was unimportant, could it?

  4. @vaganova – was thinking along the same lines. The 2008 Compass got a 4 stars for driver safety with a 5-star rating on Side impact, Front. It came standard with Front airbag and seat belt pretensioners. Side curtain airbags were an option that model year. No way Boo doesn’t get completely messed up and Del doesn’t get completely dead here.

  5. I got hit in the side making a left in a 1996 Geo Metro, but it was slow enough I just needed a new door. Gray car, gray road, gray morning, my sight blocked by a truck parked on the street. Gawd, I hate gray cars.

  7. Yes Ned, this team is good. Real good. I know they wont keep up the .700 winning percentage all year, but they have so many ways to beat you its just hard to see them going into any kind of slump that would derail the huge lead they have already. Ballpark looks terrific; theyve added the modern stuff without detracting from the old-time look of the park. Hope you get out there soon, because this is the kind of team all the Cub fans have wanted, and they’ll be good for a long time too.
