Worse-Case?

This will be a quick post from me this week. There’s not much to add to the melodrama rehash.

I guess we can assume that’s Dr. Pearl with her hair down, preparing to blast the parents with the news. Perhaps many of the parents will be puzzled at why their kids are going to school this late into June.

  1. Good to see Del’s face wasn’t permanently attached to that airbag. Nice bracelet. Will young Master Bader be coming to visit him? He can then blame that cow of a judge for the current mess the old man is in.

  2. P1: Brand managers everywhere shudder at the thought of the iconic S.S. Mart logo juxtaposed with the steaming remains of tonight’s fatal. Maybe that store doesn’t carry tarps or paint.

  3. Oh, left side of panel 1 guy is using a camera. For at least 5 minutes I thought he was saluting the tow truck.

I would prefer to see Dr. Pearl under happier circumstances… like Cody Exner getting arrested, or Hutch Renfro getting arrested, or Marty Moon’s sister claiming that Brent Raptor is suicidal in an attempt to get Gil fired or… um, wow. Dr. Pearl is a truly a sign of the apocalypse.

  4. School here in CT doesn’t let out until Thursday. Having said that, sports ended weeks ago, so I can’t explain that part of it. Of course True was still studying for the AP exam, which took place in May, so who knows how the Thorpian calendar works.

  5. There is a lot to like about Del’s depiction in panel two. From the bandaged up traffic cone at the the foot of his bed, to the monitoring equipment not hooked up to anything, to what I presume is a handcuff hooked up to the gurney… just so many details. Say, usually they have a TV you can watch while you’re in a room like that. Do you suppose they denied Del TV privileges?

Ah, as Ned points out, these truly are the worse of times…

  6. The last day of school here in Western NY is 22 June. They still start school the Wednesday after Labor Day, so the kids get out a little later than most. Spring sports had their championship games this past weekend.
Does anyone have any idea what the logo on the officer’s shoulder is? I don’t see an M for Milford, or PD for Police Department. Part of it might be in the Klingon alphabet.

  7. Ah, yes, chunky bracelets are so fashionable in Mfnrd that even Del is wearing them!

  8. As far as this business regarding school in June….well, let’s give Gil Thorp a little slack here. First, what about summer school ? After all, Bitsy Twill (1988-92) went to summer classes in the summer of 1989 since she’d goofed off so much during her freshman year. So, wouldn’t students be going to school THIS summer ?

Also, just because school might be out for most students, doesn’t mean that students wouldn’t be having any contact with the school whatsoever. For something like the tragic death of a student, many schools would have counselors available for a short time during the summer.

  9. Waiting for Marty Moon’s insightful WDIG reports from his basement cardboard box imaginarium. “Who died, Marty?” “Mom!”

  10. Okay, point taken, slack given. I don’t know how school works anymore.

Additionally, we’ve beaten this dead horse before…aaaand, not only that, there clearly is a well established Milford school calendar that resolves around the three seasons of sports plus summer.

Panel 3 is confusing on many other levels that I couldn’t figure out how to articulate and I still don’t want to try now.

  11. This looks like the beginning of a typically rushed conclusion to a seasonal plotline, which will be very disappointing if it happens.

  12. School ends here this week with one full day and four (!?!) half days.

With that curly mop and brows, Del looks very off-model today, kind of like one of those caricatures of 1940s actors in the old Warner Brothers cartoons.

  13. Thats not a traffic cone, thats his leg, broken from the force of the accident. Shoulda killed him off and had Boo in the hospital. Ned, why is P3 confusing? She’s asking the party on the other end how many grief counselors were sent to the school, and will email the parents about it with info on when their kids can meet with them. What else do you need?

  14. I worked in a public high school for decades, and panel 3 is depressingly familiar. One year we had four deaths– one from an undiagnosed cardiac issue, another from a traffic accident, and two suicides. Dr Pearl is depicted in late evening, perhaps awakened in her nightshirt.

As far as the school calendar is concerned, there is little question it is rotated forward. Even here in New York, one of the last places on the old calendar– we open after Labor Day, and finish in late June– the schools are in exam week right now with graduation weekend coming up and state sports championships just ended. But Jack Berrill was a northeasterner– Connecticut– and I am guessing his successors have simply stuck to the old timetable, even if the sports seasons run a couple of weeks longer than even New York and New England.
