Classic Barry

In case it wasn’t made clear already, Barry has a problem. Barry’s problem is that he is Barry and he has no way of modulating his Barry-ness. There’s 100% Barry or no Barry at all.

Barry is Barry and people didn’t like him precisely for his Berry-ness even before his father got tanked up and caused the accident. Now, Barry has doubled-down (some say the chip on his shoulder grew three sizes), gone to eleven, broke the Barry barrier, etc. and his insufferable mouth is begging for punching. Why should we have expected any different? Classic Barry.

  1. Aww, Gil’s patented “Five Seconds of Wisdom” counseling technique didn’t suddenly remake Barry’s obnoxious personality? I’m shocked.

I do love me the Gil Thorp profile in panel 2, complete with chin dimple. He’s ready for the comics page Mount Rushmore if you ask me.

  2. It’s possible that Whigrub, unable to top the Summer of Herk, eventually decided there just won’t be a summer this year. It appears Barry will antagonize enough people to get jammed into a locker, and that that will have to be addressed. Del’s trial could run during the summer plot, but there were hints of more ballgames a few days ago. Perhaps billy can tell us the latest date school has remained in session in Mfnrd. I am pretty sure we are pushing that record right now.

  3. School in mid-July; I wonder if Muckford adopted a year-round school calendar? No wonder Barry’s so pissed off.

  4. When is someone going to beat the crap out of Barry. This guy is in the running for most annoying Gil Thorp character ever.

  5. Gil: “Of course you’re loyal to your dad. Problem is, that’s the worst choice since Travolta made ‘Battlefield Earth’. Del didn’t exactly kill Boo Radley, but if this were the NHL, he’d get credit for the assist. Feelings are still raw. School is still in session, even though NFL training camps open in less than two weeks. Big guys with satchels full of bricks still wander the hallways … what was I talking about?”
Barry: “You were about to tell me to go make the situation worse”.
Gil: “Oh? Yeah, I probably was. I’ve been proactive in that area in the past. Glad we had this talk”.
    Barry: “You too, coach”.

  6. All the Barry in Ned’s first line made me think of “The Tick vs. The Tick”, particularly the Barry-Barry-Barry-Barry-BARRY” bit from the final Tick vs. Tick showdown. (Though to be honest, after yesterday’s post I already had one foot in the late 80s/early 90s.)

It was the first episode of “The Tick” I ever saw, back in college. I was hooked instantly. Y’all can dish about Barry; I’m gonna go watch more “Tick”.

  7. Will Barry attempt to punch out the girl in the” jerk” group? Which makes me wonder why Boo and Barry never crossed paths .

  8. Nice cryptic advice from Gil. He forgot to add “Try not to get your ass beat.”

IIRC “What are you jerks looking at?” is the unofficial state motto of New Jersey.

  9. Jive Turkey – Probably. Too bad she’s not Kenzie Hanley…

  10. I’m with you, John S. You could crack a walnut on that chin.

On one hand, I gotta say Barry’s hostility is a bit justified after that doozy of a pep talk from Gil. On the other, I would pay real money if this is leading up to strips showing them whacking Barry with their bags.

  11. I am waiting for him to get mouthy in the cafeteria and for Kenzie to rake is yaw. Captain Ken will try to prevent this, but somehow fail. The boy who filled in at second and committed the error will feel vindicated. One has to sympathize with a kid who has been under the influence of his asshole father for sixteen years, but the lights ought to be going on by now.

  12. $1,000 says this ends with lame “Can’t we all just get along?/Boo wouldn’t want this!” speech from Tru that saves Barry from a well-deserved ass-kicking.
