Solitary Barry

Filed under: Boredom in Milford — nedryerson @ 3:39 am

Better hustle up! The girls are holding tables at the Bucket and guys are getting stuffed in Mike Granger’s trunk. Panel 2 has to be Mike Granger’s finest moment. One time he subbed for Max Bacon in basketball, but some other guy was actually shown. He spoke first at the post-Boo team meeting, but like everybody else, he keyed in on True and ignored the real issue. He caught a pop up to end a game. He had the usual roll call shout outs too, but the prize has to go to all the room he has in his trunk because cheap laughs are all that make this exercise worthwhile.

But what about Barry?  Gil? Kaz? Anyone?

  1. Poor a-hole Barry is left behind by the rest of the team. Will Saint Tru come back and take him to the Bucket demonstrating the leadership that Gil lacks. There seems to be no resolution to this rambling arc.

  2. I never noticed that Mike Granger had such a 90s haircut before now. That makes him more memorable than prior occupants of his role as “guy who appears in multiple sports but is never a factor in a storyline”, guys like Steve Rosen, Charles Bloom, and Miles Paris.

  3. Two “Hustle Ups” in two days! And the first two “Hustle Ups” heard since, oh, 1958.

  4. Hey, they could’ve put Barry in the trunk & then “forgotten” to let him out.

  5. Returning after a media-free week; so very glad to see NOTHING HAS CHANGED!

As a lad growing up in the Midwest, several nights each summer I’d crawl into the trunk, next to the warm 12-pack of Pabst and the 3.2 Michelob, to sneak into the Drive-in Movies. It was a painful way to save $2.50.

  6. Car trunks and thoughts of Cagney. Anybody see the movie where his victim is crying “I can’t breathe!” from the car trunk, and Cagney shoots the trunk lid full of holes for “ventilation?” Poor Barry, we have come to see, is a victim too, of bad luck and an asshole father, but for some reason he does bring that Cagney scene to mind…

  7. The only satisfying resolution possible at this point? The girls’ softball team does the honors, dousing him in horse liniment, duct-taping him to the goalpost, and (optional) re-enacting Radiohead’s “Burn The Witch” video. Anything else will be another letdown.

  8. I’ve seen a lot of Cagney movies. Is that scene from”White Heat” which of course is also noted for “Top of the world, Ma!”
That is a strange hug in panel 1. Is that a Milford bro hug?

  9. That IS a strange hug, Jive Turkey. And a little disturbing. Yes, White Heat (1949.) “I’ll give ya a little air!”

  10. I would definitely stay away from that guy in the shower.
