Backing Up (Like a Dump Truck)

Kevin Pelwecki may not have a poster of the right guard on his wall, but does he have Groucho Marx and Chuck McCann in his medicine cabinet?

Here we were for the past couple of days remarking on how this strip portrays football positions in dialog balloons as abbreviations and wondering whether Milfordians pronounced them as abbreviations, and now here are kids sounding out the full name of each position. In so doing The Secret Pelwecki shows himself to be yet another in a very long line of Milford Idiots who want nothing more than to be the defensive lineman right guard center of attention. I blame reality television.

Then – hey y’all, look! It’s a rare Coach Shaw spotting – and with more lines than just about ever. He’s setting us up for the fifth-string QB‘s transition into the third-string TE. Kaz, however, has had enough of his talk. By doing an end-around to snatch Coach Shaw’s MATT mug, Kaz asserts his dominance over Coach Shaw and maintains his status as beta male on the Milford sidelines.

  1. So Gil has five quarterbacks but only one player prepared to play tight end — I mean “Tee”? That’s the kind of planning that requires a three-man coaching staff.

How long till he makes the obvious connection? Will we lose a few games thanks to horrible TE play before Heather grabs one of the coaches by the lapels and says “Look, you idiot! You’ve got a big beefy player who wants to take on a skill position! And he’s Polish-American just like Gronk! Do I have to draw you a diagram?”

  2. Our 3 amigos are down at the Tabard Inn trying to sort out plotlines by osmosis, hoping something sticks in time for basketball season. Funny, Gil has aged a few years leaving me to wonder if he forgot his 1) dentures 2) cane 3) coffee mug 4) any or all of the above.
Is MATT really an acronym we don’t know about? Is that why it floats from time to time in our lives, an unwanted bug on the screen? This would make a good Jeopardy question.
Contestant: What is Milford And The Tremelos?
Alex Trabek: No, no, I’m sorry, that is incorrect. Carol?
Contestant: What is Milford Aeronautical Technology Treaty?
Alex Trabek: You are right. That brings your total up to $12,350 and you are still in the lead. Still your turn.
    Contestant: Milford Paraphenalia for $400.
Alex Trabek: This former assistant lapped up to Gil in the ’70’s before turning the tables a couple of times on Coach Thorp while coaching at Oakwood. John?
    Contestant: Who is Tod Andrews?
