Milford is hosting Valley Tech. If you can peer back through all the ineffectual sleuthing of the last few weeks worth of strips, you’ll recall that Aaron predicted he was going to have a big game. He probably shouldn’t get in the game at all given the mouthing off in panel one, but we know Gil’s selective attention allows players to get away such violations.

Let’s focus on those suits! Kaz is sporting an electric blue zoot suit over a black shirt/white tie combo. Gil is more conservative yet stylish, but…check out Gil’s shirt! Sure it’s likely just one of those wacky colorist mistakes, but it appears you can see through Coach Thorp to the bleachers behind him. Is Gil just a hologram? That would explain so much!

Now it’s time for Aaron to have his big game. Let’s watch.

  1. Why is Aaron still on this goddamned team, much less passing the ball to one of the rats that’s been all up in his business all season? Why hasn’t Aaron just walked away with some dignity and honor intact?

  2. I’m just happy to see some basketball action in the strip again. Kaz and Gil looking like they just walked out of a Midnight Star music video is gravy.

  3. I feel sorry for Funchess. I don’t know that we’ve even gotten a glimpse of him; he’s just the guy shuffled in and out of the lineup to accommodate Aaaaron.

Also, I know Whigham loves to recycle art, but using the same pose in consecutive panels is kind of extreme.

  4. So are the bookies who are involved ìn the point shaving scheme going to break his mother’s arm because he plays on the level?

  5. About a month ago our favorite artist drew a very Liliputian like Gil sitting in the bleachers. That’s no comparison how small Gil should feel in panel 1 as an inmate runs the asylum. But he doesn’t feel small. Or shame . As long as Kaz keeps spiking and refilling his Gatorade bottle, coaching the team is small potatoes.

  6. John S. @3: I think Funchess is the smooth-domed fellow in P2 of the December 28 strip.

  7. I love how Gil looks completely disinterested in the game. I have never seen a high school basketball coach be so chill during. (Also, **BRAG ALERT ABOUT THINGS DEFINITELY WORTH BRAGGING ABOUT** my Gil Thorp comedic stylings won me comment of the week on the Curmudgeon this week!)

  8. Teenchy: Even so, Funchess has to be the all-time leader for highest mention-to-appearance ratio. Maybe next year we’ll get a Funchess story. It’d only be fair.

  9. Congrats, Drewfunk! I was going to call you out tomorrow (assuming I remembered) when I posted. Nicely done.

  10. Congratulations!!!!!! drewfunk, I like your comments. You have a VERY acute sense of humor that hits the funny bone in all directions. You deserve it.

Gil and Kaz are obviously posing for the “Sharp-Dressed Man” video. The refs told the coaches that if those 3 ladies who boogie to that tune throughout the video appear suddenly, cuttin’ a rug at the jump circle, technicals will be assessed. And the ZZ Topmobile could park at Milford as long as they didn’t block the busses or park in the handicap section. BTW, I always wondered if Coach Shaw was one of the long beards of the group, shades and all. Now if those 3 women drop in on Marty Moon’s booth…

  11. Nice work, drewfunk. Well deserved.
