Wellington? Ellington?

Filed under: actual action, baseball, Gil Thorp — timbuys @ 9:04 am

Panel one is looking good, while in panel two we have an interesting depiction of whom I believe is Barry Bader displaying poor diving form.

Panel three just cracks me up… That dopey grin on Gil’s face while he’s telling the pitcher to hold the runner close and clouds are literally gathering around them… That’s the good stuff.

  1. …and if Heather is the one who taught Moose hip rotation and extending those arms and not pulling your head when you swing, I’m leaving. This rent-a-coach is wearing thin.
P3: I agree with timbuys. I think a couple of Mudlarks might get swept up in The Rapture, judging by the clouds in huddle formation. Like the song from Styx(The Grand Illusion-you whippersnappers, snap this one up. It pretty much tells the story of your life),
“I thought that they were angels,
    Much to my surprise.
    They climbed aboard our starship,
    We headed for the skies.”

  2. So, Ragin’ Ryan has come on in relief? I think he’s the only Ryan to be mentioned thus far, but the drawing is tricky: Gil’s instructions appear to be going to the catcher– the player in charge– who is Mike Granger, no? If we don’t see a notorious case of hit-by-pitch this season I will be very surprised.

  3. No wonder Bader is diving incorrectly, that giant mitt has got to weigh a ton. Surely that would throw him off.

  4. Do baseballs always go off like a flashbulb when hit?

  5. Always.

  6. “Let the runner on first know you see him.”

“Gotcha, Coach. Fastball right in his ear.”

  7. Those aren’t lyrics from The Grand Illusion, they’re lyrics from Come Sail Away (which is on The Grand Illusion album, though). Know your Styx!

  8. Moon Mullins, with all due respect, I will admit I should have made myself clear as I meant “The Grand Illusion” as the album title, not as the song. It would have helped if I had credited “Come Sail Away” from the lyrics. That said, my dad owned record stores and was also a promoter for rock bands in the ’60’s and ’70’s. I was bound to learn something. Also, I bought “The Grand Illusion” fresh off the release in ’77 plus I was religiously listening to(and still do listen to) “The Serpent is Rising”, “Equinox”, “Crystal Ball”, “Pieces of Eight”, “Styx”,”Cornerstone”, “Kilroy Was Here”, etc. But in the end, I apologize for the misunderstanding as I do try to be as accurate as possible. I do appreciate the support people have given me. It DEFINITELY keeps me going.

  9. So are they playing Wellington or Ellington. Could it be a split squad game and Gil is coaching both?
