This Week in Milford

Sisters Are Getting Bored for Themselves

gt04272017

As the Argonia High activity bus rolls out of the Milford parking lot in a cloud of dust, Mimi wins the Captain Obvious award. Carrie’s had the better part of a year to hone her skills and grieve the unexpected loss of the team’s star pitcher. What she hasn’t been able to do is to pull herself out of the misogynistic mire at Milford High. Perhaps I’m being too harsh here; after all, people have been feigning interest in the interests of those they’re attracted to since time immemorial. Nevertheless this week’s strips feel like they’ve taken us down the path to another Bechdel Test failure.

Dafne “Dafuq?” Dafonte may be trying to break that fail streak singlehandedly. First, she made an enemy of Casper “The Friendly Brain” Heenan by exposing his profligate spending. Now, she’s alienated several members of the track team by dissing their efforts as boring to their faces. Who else will Dafne piss off before the spring arc is over? Time will tell…

  1. “The only thing more boring than track … is field”.
And she says that right in front of the shot putter.

  2. Between insulting track and provoking hilarious responses from the school board, Dafne is my favorite character. Track meets are miserable even when you run track. Regrettably, somehow we’ve transitioned from “Casper Heenan plots revenge” to “Carrie has a crush on a track star.” Tune in next week for “Cane gets mad at a random shot put dude from Central.” Tune in for the next 8 weeks to find out if any of these plots will ever connect or overlap.

Since the spring plot line is now designated as the ‘disaster and/or death’ story arc, I’m guessing all these plots overlap will in a big spine-tingling ending. Perhaps all these characters become hostages together during a bank robbery? Perhaps even all locked in the vault together with Lucy and Mr. Mooney?

  4. “The only thing more boring than track … is field” I never heard this expression before. Has GT coined a new phrase???

  6. Goddammitt, for starters that joke is NOT funny, secondly, she plays goddamned softball and is completely ignoring the fact that most of our best-known female athletes are Track+Field stars, and finally, the “girls find sports boring” is a moldy trope that needs to die…

  7. Wellllllll… Track does kinda blow. I ran track to stay in shape for football. It was expected. After finishing next to last in 100yd dash I had to watch other trash flunkies until meet was over. Then a long bus ride home. Field sucks too.

  8. I’m not sure that teenage boys get too exercised over the wording of what nice looking girls say to them.

  9. There actually is something more boring than field — this plotline.

    Little help, please.

  10. Nice to see Mimi offer encouragement after the game and killing 2 birds with one stone by donning attire suitable for the Lions Clubs International meeting she will eventually attend tonight. Just quickly swipe some Ban Roll-On under both armpits, button the jacket, and VOILA the transition from Distaff Knute Rockne to Super Business Woman is complete. Like the song from The Church, …”look at the Business Woman/she’s got a head on her shoulders.” Couldn’t agree more.
