I’m not buying Dafne Dafonte as some bulldog investigative reporter if it’s that easy to brush her off.

However, based on that flipper in panel three, I am absolutely buying that the volcano has some wicked movement on his pitches.

  1. If word ever gets out about how nosy Milford high schoolers are, people will probably stop moving there.

  2. I know one thing – if Dafne ever came over to my house in that outfit, I would pretty much tell her anything she wanted to hear. Wait a minute, she’s 17 or so, right? Uh, forget I ever said that. But I’m sure hoping this whole transfer thing has a Cully Vale angle to it.

  3. OK, I see that the big mystery is to be what Volcano Van Auken did to get thrown out of prep school. What I’m not seeing is how this is a suitable story for the Mfnrd Trumpet. More likely it will come down to Gil Reaches Kid with Anger Management Issues. We may not have long to wait for the cauldron to bubble, since the Three Witches from Central City will be showing up for the ballgame soon, presumably to kneecap their former classmate.

  4. You know, much like the last basketball plot with Aagard’s opioid-addicted mother, this plot would work so much better if it was Marty Moon digging up the dirt on the troubled teen of the month instead of fellow students. Moon’s motivation makes sense, he’s a petty jerk who thinks he’s a much bigger deal than he is and wants to prove it by taking Gil down. Granger, Brown, Dafne, and the like are motivated by what, curiosity? In my experience, teenagers are great gossips but poor detectives.

  5. Boom, billy. I had not thought of Meddlin’ Marty as an agent in the basketball plot and he would be perfect for this one. But for whatever reason, Rubin chose several years ago to put Marty on ice. Easy to picture the Marty of ten years ago interrogating Gil: “You mean you KNEW why van Auken was kicked out of Kingsfoil and you still put him on your team?” etc. I’m afraid that instead, we’ll see Daffy and the aptly named Ms Rizk needlessly expose something Mfnrd does not need to know. Just as lagniappe, I suspect that Van Auken’s “offense” will be considerably less shocking than we will be led to expect. This is Mfnrd.

  6. “My family moved. But it had nothing to do with the pitchforks and torches, do you hear me? NOTHING!”

  7. Not that I really wish the old Marty were back full time, though there is a clear opening for him right now. During the years when he was Gil’s principal antagonist, there was a constant nasty subtext to the strip, namely that it is journalism’s nature to be vindictive and unreliable. Now we have the occasional appearance by Marjie Ducey, more pleasant than the constant question of why Marty has not been fired for libeling everyone in a thirty mile radius.

  8. Nice, John S.

  9. His real name is Jose Francisco Alamogordo y Lopez and, yes, technically, his familia, er, family DID move. They took as many of their belongings from the estado of Chihuahua and crammed themselves into a Baylor Trucking trailer that was transporting bananas. They could have simply walked across the foot bridge at El Paso and nobody would have cared then hustled to the Greyhound station in order to finish off the hegira but NOOOOOOOO, this is Thorpiverse and since Marty Moon is in exile, our cub reporter has to take up the slack. As long as this plot is barreling out of control down the hill, Nancy Drew might as well ask The Volcano how many night classes did it take before the accent disappeared or if his family’s immigration papers are in order.
But maybe Marty will return and the world will be safe for democracy. Freedom of the Press will engender the muckraking methods that befits his modus operandi and Jose will be sent back.
