Journalism Fail

Filed under: Chunky Bracelets — nedryerson @ 3:25 am

Dafuck, Dafonte? I thought you had this journalism racket down pat. Sourcing a story from social media? This is the Milford Trumpet, not TMZ! Ms. Rizk and her mechanical pencil are so disappointed.

  1. In The Absence Of Anything Interesting Story-Wise, what’s the deal with Dafne’s shoulder bag? She’s leaning to the right, the bag’s on her right shoulder. It should be sliding off.

  2. I should also note that serious journalist Dafne should probably get her ass off the school paper advisor’s desk.

  3. You know your faculty sponsor is hip when they drink coffee out of a peace sign mug.

    I wonder what B – CT =

  4. Brava, Ms Rizk. Bulls-eye. Even if the story is true, the only way the story is news in Mfnrd is if Van Auken is deemed a danger to others and this produces gossip and controversy. Probably not even then, as Ryan is likely a minor. Presumably the police and the court are fine with the idea of his being in school in Mfnrd. If Daffy feels she must “act,” she would do better to tell Ryan (and Gil) about the anonymous call so they can be prepared for “bleacher events” at the ballgame.

  5. Is High School baseball really a spectator sport anywhere? If 3 girls from Central City show up at the game, then there will be 3 people in the stands.

  6. Meanwhile, in the REAL Milford:

  7. Old lady Rizk is Berkeley Heathen Scum. Another fine song by the band Fang. Unless that’s an old TWA mug.

  8. billy, I’m going to assume the B-CT= is the edge of what we saw written on the board on 5/19 strip. Part of that Object Verb Subject diagram.

Having gone back and looked at that strip, it’s even more odd that Dafne perched herself on the desk. There was only about six inches of space there, but she planted her ass there. Her Mfnerd should be right in Ms. Rizk’s grill.

  9. Downpuppy is right that high school baseball does not draw the crowds that football or basketball do, but in my region is does ok. Usually there are a couple of hundred spectators. Attendance is down for everything these days, perhaps because people have so many other things to do. In the 1970s, football crowds of 6-8000 were common. Now it’s more like 6-800.

  10. Jive Turkey @7: If not a TWA mug, then a Mercedes-Benz mug that Ms. Rizk graffitied like these protesters did to the rotating sign above the Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof.

  11. What’s going on here, did you ask?

I don’t know. But if anyone’s interested in my suspicions, here they are. I suspect the “Ryan hits girl” story is true. There have been half a dozen strong clues in that direction and none contrary. And if so, my guess is that the incident was fairly serious and the reason the family left Central City and Kingswhoop. My guess is also that he is trying hard– and largely successfully– to control his temper in the new setting of Mfnrd. Hoping we eventually learn the backstory, and of what the police and the court did, assuming they were involved.

The story has potential, especially with so many instances of violence against girls and women in the news. My hope is that Rubin is not going to “go all political,” in other words use the story to argue that girls are automatically victims, or that boys are unfairly persecuted. We had enough instances of a thumb on the scale back in the Jerry Jenkins era, and I’m hoping we just get some honest storytelling.

Teenchy? Great call on the Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof.

  12. Update on that peace sign mug. I’m staying at a hotel in Seattle. I just looked out from 7 story window and there’s a sign lit up like the peace sign on her mug. Maybe it’s a symbol of one of the things Teenchy mentioned. Either way, that’s quite a coincidence. And wild, wild stuff!
