The Trey Davis and Jaquan Case story continues.

I don’t know where this is going or whether any of this is important. I know that Trey looks like a baby-faced Gil in Panel 2.

  1. The color version of today’s strip could leave readers confused.

  2. teenchy, that’s pretty funny. Sorry I missed it.

I’m glad Josh was on the spot to point it out and get a good joke out of it. In my state, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed the error.

  3. It is the colorist’s mistake entirely, but Whigham doesn’t help them out much by placing the two similar-looking characters so close to each other and showing almost none of Trey’s little hair tuft.

I like how Trey and Jaquan have switched facial hair since 2005.

  4. GT: You know what’s more pathetic than dudes who peaked while playing high school sports and can’t let go? Dudes who start bullshitting about how rich and famous and successful they are and demanding instant fealty from some random high school students even though they’ve never been in the news and for reasons is creeping around a high school football field like a loser who peaked in high school would…

GT 2: Seriously — Why aren’t you and your D-League butt buddy rehabbing at your state-of-the-art sports clinic in Zurich, if you’re such a badass? Why are you trolling around rural Douchebag Valley, Ahia or wherever the Gilbertoverse is located? Why the hell are you rehabbing an alleged pro basketball player on a high school football field? We’re starting to creep into Funky Winkerbean stupidity here.

  6. Lol – so in 12 years all you have to say about yourself is you had minor knee surgery. Anything else? I could write a book about the last 12 years of my life and I didnt have any knee surgery at all. How long ago was this? 2007? Still rehabbing 10 years later? The NBA? Dude, your 31 now. How many 31-year-olds are just now joining the NBA besides the odd foreigners like Vlade Divac, or Tony Kukoc? Who goes from a personal -trainer workout regimen to the pros just like that? Hiding in Milford?? Sure, thats how you get noticed by the greatest basketball league in the world. You havent played a serious game in how long? Games are way harder then just pumping iron and running laps around the Milford track. You’ll be lucky if the 12th man on the worst team in the league is in ONLY twice the shape your in.

I’d love to see someone fly across the country to their high school reunion and tell everyone all theyve done since graduation is they had minor knee surgery.

  7. I read this as Jaquan has been in the NBA for years & is in the air about rehab or retire. Could be wrong – we need at least another week of exposition.

  8. I agree with Downpuppy. I suspect Jaquan has been playing in the NBA for eight or ten years– he almost signed out of high school– and is now facing a decision to come back after surgery or retire. I also doubt he’d be wearing the Tronix jersey if they had been a flash in the pan when he was eighteen, or that Kevin Palooka would be astonished to be shaking his hand. I sympathize with robmize’s impatience– this story is opening even more slowly than most– but I have to point out that no one asked Jaquan to summarize the past ten or twelve years. Two high school kids have just met two professionals– a player and a trainer– and this holds considerable promise for a summer plot. The question of what they are doing in Mfnrd is a little less clear, though the implication is that Jaquan wants to rehab out of the public eye, and Trey’s home town could not fit the bill better. I suspect they even have access to Thera-Bands and squeeze-and-freeze compressors.

  9. I thought the profile in panel 3 was Jaquan — I overlooked the very subtle lack of chinbeard. Generally, I think Rubin is aiming to build suspense with this agonizingly slow and random character introduction, but all he’s dong is confusing his dozens of faithful readers. We need some simple exposition, STAT.

  10. John S, “It is clear by inspection,” as they say at MIT, that Rubin is, as you say, confusing his dozens of readers. But we will still do well to keep in mind each introductory clue, no matter how silly it seems at the time. Today, for example, Jaquan’s expression in panel 2 and Trey’s quip in panel 3 hint that the NBA star’s state of mind is going to be important to the summer plot, and I strongly suspect HC Burns– as one of the few grownups in sight over the past year or so– is going to figure in the outcome.

  11. Kenzie Hanley last year, and now Jaquan Case. Accomplished athletes rehabbing an injury in a spot perfectly unsuited to the job, with no qualified therapists to be found.
I’ve been living in this Western NY small town for almost 25 years, and in all that time, we’ve never once had a big deal athlete show up at our high school for rehab work. They keep winding up in places like the Cleveland Clinic or Colorado Springs.
