This Week in Milford

Nice to Know Somebody Likes Something About All of This

gt11092017

There’s an underlying aura of creepiness that I can’t exactly put my finger on about today’s strip. Is it Trainer Rick Scott’s “I like what I see here” as he lovingly cradles Rick’s bare foot and calf? Is it that Uncle Gary (and his enormously oversized Bluetooth earbud) has a posse of the equally underemployed to roll out YouTube videos at his command? Is it Rick waving his arm like Evita Peron* as he sings the national anthem? Or is it the idea of rando Milfordian’s grandpa’s browser history that led him to Rick’s performance?

*It doesn’t take much to imagine Rick singing “Don’t cry for me, Milford High School…”

metapost: Weird double post this morning. Hopefully I fixed it.

  1. P4: “thanks, Alfred E. Neuman…”

  2. Too bad. I’d somehow started to hope that Rubin would avoid predictability, and have the video rack up a mere 23 views on You Tube. Gary would re-think his priorities, and someone would get a concussion. Instead, it looks like the video will be the biggest hit since “Welcome Back, Carter”, Gary will double down on his schemes, and someone will get a concussion.

  3. Did Trainer Rick Scott acquire his expertise from repeatedly watching “The Junction Boys”?

  4. That READ sign in the back of panel three is terrific.

Plate ‘o shrimp points: I myself enjoyed a delicious red Honeycrisp apple this morning with some milk (in my coffee). Here’s hoping your apple isn’t a Red Delicious, Rick!

  5. Well done, teenchy. I think this casts Uncle Gary as Augustin Magaldi, and perhaps Gil as Peron himself, if he has a high C. I say bring on the concussion, especially if it arises from UG leaping in the air in triumph over the video and knocking himself out on the doorframe (a basketball player I knew in college did that by jumping into the bottom of the backboard.) It also appears timbuys and I have similar taste in apples. Wonder if he thinks of the Red Delicious as brightly colored sawdust too.

  6. Um… If Gary can make some teenage mook singing the anthem to a bunch of yokels at his high school in his hick hometown way out in podunk instantly go viral, then I’m truly impressed and his talents are being wasted in this North Central Ohio hellhole… He could be making $10 million a year in Hollywood, New York or Silicon Valley…

  7. On the monitor in P2, Rick is actually trying to get the crowd to wave their hands in the air like they just don’t care.

  8. Hey, who here rests their fingers on the keyboard while they’re watching a video (viral or otherwise) on their laptop? I don’t and I gotta say Uncle Gary does not look very relaxed.

  9. teenchy, My Man, you never disappoint. I about fell out my dad’s truck laughing over the “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” comment.

Uncle Gary, evidently a Husker Du fan like yours truly, is on the prowl in the recording studio

“Knocking over every thing that’s standing in your way
Can you tell me just how many did you kill today
    YOU’RE A SOL-DIER
    YOU’RE A SOL-DIER
    YOU’RE A SOL—”

    “HOLD IT!!!!!!!!! HOLD IT!!!!!!!!!”
Coach Shaw just botched the guitar licks for the umpteenth time. Uncle Gary sighs and shakes his head. It is clear to UG that Coach Shaw is no Bob Mould.
UG, trying to keep his voice down so he doesn’t hurt Shaw’s feelings, turns to an aide-de-camp
“Any way Grant Hart’s available? He wrote the song didn’t he? And he also plays guitar along with the drums?”
“Yes, but he’s booked solid this week at a coffee house in Anniston, Alabama.”
