Hawker Rocked Like a Hurricane

gt11232017

Finally the focus turns to football, just as it should on Thanksgiving Day. I know I’ve ranted about Milford and other teams wearing white at home but absent any explanation it’s a pet peeve of mine*. Maybe New Thayer is the Valley’s version of LSU and they’ve got a wacky coach like Les Miles. They have a fancier crate for Marty than Marty has at home, I’ll give ’em that. That and a cooler turn in the weather has Marty breaking out his Captain Haddock mock turtleneck.

I suppose we’ll spend the next couple of days in suspense over which Mudlark comes out of this game with a concussion. Nick Hawker is thrown out there as the first candidate; he doesn’t appear to be the ball carrier in P3, so I’m thinking New Thayer’s initial approach is to take away the dive. Gil should know by now that a key to a successful option offense is to chop and cut block like a mother, Georgia Tech style. Maybe a NT defender will land a knee to the head of a chopping Milford lineman. You knew these boys would be tempting fate yesterday by getting their burgers from a drive-thru and not at The Bucket.

It’s this kind of gridiron analysis that we’ve been pining for all season long. Have at it, TWIMers, and happy turkey day!

*TWIMer Downpuppy notes the Mudlark unis are a bit snazzy in the color version of today’s strip, not unlike a Georgia blackout.

  1. The color version today is fun, with the sky going night to day, tree clouds & more. The color scheme on Mfnrd’s uniforms is pretty snazzy.

    Duly noted, thanks! – teenchy

  2. So a month after the veer is introduced – October 23 – it makes its debut. So 4 games in real time. November 7 they were ‘making progress’. Who ever does that in real life? You dont have a month after the season begins to put in a new offense. The season lasts 8 weeks from 1st game to last game. 9 games in 8 weeks, then the playoffs if you qualify. The seasons been over for a month out here. The playoff title games are this weekend. Nobody plays in December. Again, this shouldve been done in the summer and debuted Week 1. Fixes in the offense need to come with personnel changes, but I dont mean from guard to fullback series to series. Madness!

Happy Turkey Day everyone, and lets give thanks for each other because no way can anyone carry this strip every day.

  3. Happy Thanksgiving. I’m thankful for everybody who takes part in this peculiar pursuit of ours. I’m especially thankful for the camaraderie and irreverent spirit of fun that always graces this forum.

  4. Yeah, robmize, at the rate they’re going, two things happen on 13 February:
    1. The first pitchers and catchers will report to spring training
    2. Milford football season will end

  5. I’m thankful that my family ate Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and we all pretty much are just going to chill out today and tomorrow (except for a few wrongheaded family members who are going to participate in retail self flagellation).

Thanks to everyone who has a hand in all of this tomfoolery, Rubin and Whigham included. Most especially, thank you to the commenters who make this dubious endeavor worth further endeavoring.

  6. I’ve never really thought of it before but because of my username I need to contribute something today. “It ain’t too cool being no jive turkey so close to Thanksgiving!”
The veer needs blocking to work. Like any other offense. P3 is lacking the necessities.

  7. I too give thanks for this on line effort, futile as it may seem at times.

We’ve been left hanging. In today’s panel 3, we can’t see either Hawker’s number or tell if he has the ball. Thus it’s possible that New Thayer (has Mfnrd ever played Old Thayer?) read the veer like a billboard and is now murdalizing poor Nick, and equally possible that the ball is elsewhere and on its way to the end zone. Complicating factors– will Nick Soto take a knee to the head and start talking backward? Will he instead be called for jumping offsides and negating the gain? Will the crowd leap to its feet in triumph, catapulting UG headfirst into the tuba? It may take me a couple of days to find out. Our local “paper” has published a “Special Thanksgiving edition” and will not publish again until Monday. I have no idea how they knew in advance what would happen Friday through Sunday. This development is a first, and we peasants are polishing our pitchforks.

  8. Judging by Marty Moon’s expression, I’d say the answer to his question “Is that what I think it is?” is a flask of rotgut he’d forgotten he stashed under his fake plywood control panel.

  9. I want to give a shout-out to ned, timbuys, teenchy, and robmize who get the ball rollin’ every day. With their busy schedules, they still take the time to make this thing work and allow the regular contributors to do their thing. With a VERY liberal stance towards what can be printed, freedom of expression is the order of the day here. Some damn good comedy comes out as a result and keeps us all coming back for more. I don’t know about anyone else but I think we got a darn good thing going.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. God has truly blessed me.

  11. […] an impact somewhere before long. His ex-teammates at New Thayer probably won’t be expecting the veer this time.  Maybe Gil will have him help implement Steve Owen’s old umbrella defense, but not […]
