The Best Part Of Waking Up Is Pouring Half a Pot Of Coffee On The Floor

I’m still a little unclear on Gil’s role in brokering some sort of reproachment between Marty and the Padillas. Since Marty’s gonna be Marty and not own up to his troublesome behavior, what’s it to Gil? He was supposed to have done something before? Okay, I guess he could have paid a little more attention at what was going on at games he was coaching and flexed even the slightest administrative muscle to get the MPN to stop dicking around. But, Marty’s the one who screwed up there and at that point it had nothing to do with the Padillas. The Padillas want a sincere apology. Gil’s just flailing around here delaying the start of baseball season. Where’s Marty? I don’t want to think about this anymore.

So Panel 3 is a fun way to stop sifting through the dregs of this plot and just focus on good old fashioned giant hands and awkward pouring of coffee. Kaz has replaced his right hand with a child’s foot and is using it to kick himself in the head.

  1. Kaz’ actions are appropriate, since we’ve all reached the “kicking ourselves in the head” portion of the seasonal plotline.

That coffee pot, I must say, is another Gil Thorp anachronism. Not quite as overt as the students’ failure to use social media to hound Marty, but these days, just about every office I know of has either a Keurig machine or, at the very least, a carafe that prevents the coffee from becoming undrinkable sludge after sitting on the burner for hours on end.

Ah, how fondly I recall my early days in radio, doing the overnight shift and sucking down that sludge at 4 a.m….

  2. Panel 3 not only has Exploding Crotch Syndrome, it has yet another day of Matching Red Shirts. Kaz & Gil skimmed some swag bags.

  3. I don’t remember seeing Gil’s early ’70s watchband before. Has that been a thing all along?

  4. There is more basketball played in Kurtis Blow’s “Basketball” music video than there has been in this story arc. And I’m only counting the random still photos of Michael Ray Richardson from that music video, not the actors in the Miller Lite tank tops leaping off of trampolines or the “street” guys dropping basketballs through 5 foot tall hoops.

  5. Two points:
    1. Is it going to occur to Gil – or Mimi, or Kaz – that they’ve created a standard that says “it is OK to interfere with the radio play-by-play guy”? And that maybe the day will come that they’ll wish they hadn’t done that?
    2. John, I spent four years in the Air Force drinking the 0400 sludge, and trying to guess the day of the week it had been originally brewed. The closest I can get to it now is to allow Burger King coffee to get cold, then microwave it.

  6. What gets me, besides Gil not getting past 1st Base with Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head in P1, is that Paloma has not played ANY basketball, at least not anything to brag about, since her Controlled Assertiveness debut. Dove, I hate to break it to you but I don’t think you’re going to run the Clanton Brothers out of Tombstone, Arizona. Yes, Marty’s a jerk, tell me something new. And he went too far and deserves to be suspended.
But as some of the readership has noted, since when have teenagers been given carte blanche to practically dictate how a man oughta run his show? If you don’t like it TURN IT OFF!!!!!!! And Paloma, I could tolerate your sniveling, snotty manner IF YOU’D PLAY SOME BASKETBALL!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise, two wrongs don’t make a right.
Mimi’s at a coaching seminar, hence the explanation for zero basketball action in quite some time. Yeah, that’s it.
