Why Is Paloma Standing Behind Gil’s Desk?

041818

I mean, other than to gratuitously fit her in the frame. Really, Panel Three concisely symbolizes the whole approach of this arc. I’m not even entirely sure what the heck Jorge is talking about when he says Gil ‘might’ be right.

Fortunately, Gil’s not really listening as he strains his neck to make sure Paloma doesn’t clock him with her standard Milford High issue stack of text books.

Minus points: Sartorially, things seem out of whack. We have Mimi in a skirt (!) and long scarf, Gil going from wearing a jacket to short sleeves, and I don’t even want to begin to figure out all the ways Paloma is not dressed like a teenager.

  1. Jorge: “We think you might be right about all our personality defects.”
    Gil: “Really?”
Paloma: “Of course not! No one in history has ever said that. We have to do what Rubin wants us to do, and this is the only way he can end this story before summer.”

  2. Please please please have their demand be that Marty has to dress up as a Depression-era hobo for the next game.

  3. If Gil was half as smart and engaged as he seems today, he would have been on top of this all along. Has he been keeping in touch with Jorge? Has Mimi been coaching Paloma? If so, then why was the situation allowed to fester until the very end of the season?

  4. I predict that WDIG will send Marty to Starbuck’s bias training, delaying the end of basketball until at least May 29th. As I understand the Starbucks goal, it’s perfectly straightforward: you cannot discriminate against people by word or action because of their identity, period. But Marty will be a hard case: we have seen over the years that he has both an unearned sense of superiority AND issues of defensiveness. Maybe the manager will simply tell him “Treat people with respect or we’ll fire your ass and bring in Les Nessman.”

  8. timbuys, thanks again for all that you do for me. I liked the Telly Savalas jab too(ha).

And I liked timbuys’ reference to The Dove’s taking liberties with her positioning in Gil’s office. She’s also probably(scratch that, MORE THAN LIKELY) rummaged through Gil’s desk(“Penthouse?”) and seized a couple of scrapbooks. At least Jorge is mindful enough to keep proper distance as in any normal student-teacher or player-coach relationship(sarcasto-o-meter blipping a little).
We are simply negotiating Marty’s broadcasting career, right? I mean, as long as The Dove is going to barge in and be the 800-pound gorilla, I just want to make sure the stakes are reasonable. We’re JUST discussing a simple apology and Marty is back on the air to sling some more mud at Gil, regardless of season(thank God there’s only 4 of ’em).
For a minute, I thought Gil was negotiating with the Symbionese Liberation Army for Patty Hearst’s job restoration as a night DJ for WDIG. One crisis at a time.

  9. I’m sorry, but when did we see students picketing the station? And since when does Marty have fans?
