Frank Gehry’s Fast Food Masterpiece

091218

If you’re not knocked off balance by panels one and two, in which the architect of The Bucket tells Euclid to piss off, then the shifting narrative and stilted dialogue (plus mystery girl in panel two) shouldn’t present too much more of a challenge to parse.

For myself, I can confess nothing but disappointment that we aren’t getting another chance to continue talking about the shitty cars we drove in high school (and/or are driving presently). As it stands, I suppose we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to understand why these characters are being introduced.

Bonus question: Why is the strip’s date inserted front and center of panel two?

  1. This strip is beginning to remind me of the last days of “Apartment 3-G.” Sequences of almost random panels with little effort to engage the reader.

  2. History tells us that no one in this strip is a “funny dude”.

  3. Yeah, I want more shitty high school car talk! Tiki is right — it takes style to have the worst car.

One of the funny awards at band banquet (I was a band kid) was “Motor Trend Car of the Year”. My ’78 Mercury Marquis, a.k.a. the Banana Boat, didn’t even win — award went to some brown beater, I think it was a Yugo or something.

  4. Strange. The windows at The Bucket evoke those on a control tower, but The Chief depicts them convincingly. So the problem with his drawings of playing fields (home plate in foul territory, misaligned field markings, &c) is probably not geometry…

  5. I wonder if the Joe Bolek Trio goes everywhere together and always sits in a tight cluster.

  6. If this turns out to be an extended homage to “Slacker,” I’ll be okay with it. Tomorrow we’ll follow Joe Bolek as he runs into a buddy, then we’ll follow the buddy, then the buddy’s girlfriend, and we’ll just keep on introducing and abandoning characters from now until basketball season.

    Yeah, sign me up.

  7. Isn’t Tiki the cinephile? It would tie things together a little bit.

  8. Comment of the Day goes to Ned. Yeah, My Man, I thought I saw them last year at Minton’s Playhouse, comin’ on just before Diz and Bird. They even performed “Yardbird Suite”, “Scrapple at the Apple”, and “Relaxin’ at Camarillo” just before the latter was scheduled to go on.

  11. OK, so it was Bolek, not Jansen.
Am I the only one who can’t tell all the black haired little white guys apart?
