Save Filion

gt09262018

Today’s missing panel 4:

Kaz (chasing Andre Ruffin down the hall because, unlike Gil, he doesn’t have the power to pull kids out of class): Who’s this punter Mike Filion told me you know about?

Andre Ruffin: Um, he’s sick. My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw him pass out at Schultz’s Polynesian Garden last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

Who is this imposter claiming to be Mike Filion, anyway? Whigham needs to find a model for Filion and stick with it.  No matter how he looks, Filion has smarts enough to throw Kaz off his scent.  He saw that shitshow unfold in Oakwood and wants no part of it. Maybe he’s no unicorn in football cleats but he knows that one roughing the kicker call (and I wouldn’t put it past Valley Tech to try it) and Milford’s out a starting QB.

Anyone wanna bet that the kid who used to be pretty good at punting is movie buff Joe Bolek? Yeah, didn’t think so.

  1. Not gonna do the research to substantiate the claim (as is the style these days) but pretty sure P2 Kaz is recycled art.

  2. As usual, Gil will be able to pull an outstanding player out his ass just in time.

  3. Smirking Kaz face… what is he, a mildly attractive political candidate trying and failing to subtly campaign on his looks?

  4. Yes, just in time, franku… Just in time to go 6-3 and miss the playdowns again.

  5. Is this going to be Tru Standish reincarnated? BTW watch Norte Dame play Wake Forest last weekend. Tru didn’t play. Must be red shirted.

  6. @billytheskink…agree…just in time for “2nd place in the valley”

  7. How many people in high school ‘used to be good at’ punting? Is there anyone in the history of football who developed that skill and then had that ability decline for non-injury related reasons during their highschool years? Maybe this kid suffers from the punter equivalent of Chuck Knoblauch syndrome.

  8. So… Despite already having a decent punter on the team, and despite the fact that it’s infinitely easier to teach an OL/TE how to long snap than it is to teach proper punting technique, Gilberto+Kaz are going to double down on the same dumbassery that just lost them a game… Bloody Fuckin’ Brilliant!

  9. One of my twisted sources of entertainment is seeing non-sports fan authors try to write a coherent sports storyline, and Rubin has not disappointed…

  10. Brain dead Gil rather punt on 2nd down than go for it on 4th. Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole. But Gil was.

  11. This had better be Joe Bolek, because the last thing we need this season is another frickin’ character.

Rubin’s cluelessness about sports is a problem, but it’s not the core problem. Some of the greatest TV shows of all time were set in absolutely unrealistic workplaces. I loved “Frasier” despite the fact that (a) I worked in radio at the time, and (b) the depiction of a radio workplace was completely inaccurate. Not only in ways designed to enhance the humor, but also in stupid senseless ways. If “Gil Thorp” contained decent storytelling, it’d be a good strip even if the sports stuff was all wrong. The bigger problems with “GT” are the inconsistent pacing, the oversupply of characters and plotlines, and the unsatisfying payoffs.

    Also the implicit sexism.

  12. John S., good to see your comments. Always welcome with me, My Friend. Unfortunately, we DON’T need another log thrown to the plot(ha).

teenchy, poignant as usual. I’m not sure where this Room 222 confab in the hallway is going but some things are better left unsaid. Love the height discrepancy. If Filion is to give any more inside info on punters to Kaz, he’ll need a stepladder. If Filion falls and calls The Shark, at least the team has a chance to solve their punting problems. That said, LMAO at your comments, as usual.
