This Week in Milford

I came here to snark on bad coaching, not to become a cineaste!

Kaz and Joe stood there and looked at each other in silence for five minutes?  That settles it: Kaz is not salaried faculty or staff but hourly contingent labor. In any universe even remotely based in reality a coach might have given a student 5 seconds – okay, 10 seconds if we’re being generous – to answer before telling them to get out of their office the hallway and go to their next period class, or catch a school bus, or whatever.

As with The Legend of Bagger Vance, I’m not going to rehash the plot of Rififi here. The Wikipedia entry for the film states that “[a]fter he was blacklisted from Hollywood, [Director Jules] Dassin found work in France where he was asked to direct Rififi. Despite his distaste for parts of the original novel, Dassin agreed to direct the film. He shot Rififi while working with a low budget, without a star cast, and with the production staff working for low wages.” Low budget? No stars? Staff working for low wages? We could be talking about the Mudlark football team and its coaching staff.

I’d be okay with the next 28 panels of this strip having no dialogue and just action. You?

metapost: Do any of you loyal readers read TWIM on a smartphone?  I compose it on a Dell laptop with AdBlock Plus installed, but usually read comments during the day on an Android phone. Often when I do, I get spammy popup ads telling “Dear Andriod User” that I have won something or other and which I cannot close or navigate away from without closing my browser.  If anyone else is having those problems, please comment (I mean, in addition to any snark) so we can get to the bottom of this. Thanks.

  1. So, now we are gonna’ have to watch these two rump-rangers sit and pontificate about a kid who said that he “would think about it” for the next two weeks or so? Fuck you, R&W, get your heads out of your ass and try and put together a story that isn’t so fucking stupid for once

  2. Rififi’s a great movie with that great extended silent sequence, but I was really hoping Gil and Kaz would start pushing the new theory of always going for it on 4th down and never punting that’s gotten some national attention at one HS. Wasn’t there some fancy analytics computer program they mentioned in one throw-away panel early this season?

  3. In panel three, we see Gil after his mind blew out of gear listening to, but failing to comprehend, the words Kaz was saying. He takes a rather large swig of brown liquid in a way one wouldn’t with hot coffee. His face contorted, he tries to regain his bearings. If he just let’s Kaz keep talking things will eventually make sense. Indeed, Gil is pulled back into the moment when he hears the words ‘playing football’, now he just needs to listen for ‘punter’.

    Gil’s secret thoughts (p2):

“What did he say? French what movie? Do the French make… movies? What the heck would a French heights movie even be? Oh shit, he was throwing out numbers. OK, gotta remember, gotta remember. 20 and, uh, 50. Yeah. Cripes, I need to sit down and have a jolt.”

Metapost: I compose these on a Windows computer running Firefox that is perpetually logged into my WP account. I don’t use an adblocking software but I don’t see any ads for whatever reason. When I visit on my stock Android phone – and am not logged into my WP account – I have seen similar ads a long while back using the Firefox mobile browser. I haven’t seen them using the Chrome browser. I was always able to close ’em without issue but it was sincerely annoying. I can’t recall if I reported the ads at the time.

  4. I’d settle for this being like Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie… or even Robin Hood: Men In Tights.

  5. This is the part where Gilberto+Kaz need to have a REAL TALK about how badly they really want this insufferable douche of a kid…

Because it’s a very short step to “Either you screen ‘Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie’ for Social Studies class, or I ain’t showing up for practice tomorrow!!”

  6. This story reminds me of the airplane scene from “Fata Morgana,” Ein Film De Werner Herzog.

  7. These two jerk-offs should be figuring out how to get more first downs instead of recruiting some dweeb who: A) they’ve never seen punt and B) doesn’t really give a fuck about playing anyway.

  8. So “Fata Morgana” has the same plane landing over and over while the audience hopes that this time it’ll crash?
    Holy. Crap.

  9. Yes I get those stinking I won something ads all the time. I thought I mentioned a while back. Maybe not. But yes, very annoying.
I haven’t done Rock n Roll Thursday in a while. In fact, if I do again it may be on another day like Monday or Wednesday. STAY TUUUUUUUNED!
But I was thinking about a great movie that may be under the radar. Since this geek is some sort of movie buff. The movie I’m thinking of is The Last Detail with Jack Nicohlson, Otis Young and Randy Quaid from about 1973. Anyone see it? It was a beauty. They were in the Navy. Nicholson and Young were Shore Patrol and are supposed to take Quaid to prison. But they show him a good time along the way as they realize he was troubled yes but also railroaded.

  10. @John S. Walters: Thanks for the airplane porn… Flippin’ sweet!!

I think the sequence was DC-9, Boeing 727, DC-8, and then four consecutive Boeing 727, but I’m really rusty…

  11. @franku2016: Oh come on now… If Gilberto+Kaz ever acted like *real* coaches; sane, rational, competent coaches, Rubin wouldn’t get a storyline and this strip would DIE
