Hot Mike!

Marty really stuck it to RobbyBobby. He let RobbyBobby express his true feelings about the dump that is Milford and all eight phone lines lit up as WDIG’s audience went “nuclear”. Sigh.

Milford is a unique place. They have a commercial radio station that appears to be devoted exclusively to local high school sports. There is a devoted audience of said radio station who seem to enjoy Marty Moon’s daily broadcasts which frequently call Gil Thorp’s athletics program into question. The audience does not take kindly to the town of Milford itself being criticized, however.

You simply can’t analyze the actions of WDIG management using principles that exist in the “real world” of media. If you do so, you quickly find yourself asking how this station manager keeps his job if when he clearly prefers Marty Moon’s predictably mediocre following to the white heat generated by RobbyBobby’s anti-Milford tirade. It would seem we clearly have a WKRP scenario where WDIG’s station manager is the son of the station’s owner and WDIG is part of a larger portfolio of business and as such is expected to operate at a loss.

  1. There was a time less than 20 years ago when Milford High sports were covered by both WMIL and WDIG. A Mr. Digiovanni hired Marty for his upstart WDIG after WMIL had fired him, with WMIL continuing their Mudlark sports coverage with Paul Strange behind the mic. Milford is historically a strange radio market is what I am saying.

Anyways, I get that RobbyBobby grew up seeing Marty succeed in Milford radio by being what appeared to be a standard shock jock jerk while the pleasant and well-liked Paul Strange disappeared, so he thought he would do the same shtick, but he never demonstrated that he really understood the level of work Marty does at WDIG, dynamic he has with Gil, and Gil’s power in Milford.

Marty, historically, hasn’t just sat behind the microphone and griped about Gil’s below average teams… he’s worked sources or done first hand research and interviews to dig up dirt on Gil and his players. He’s loudly positioned himself as Gil’s opposition on the moral and philosophical aspects of high school sports, grounds that go beyond what occurs on the field/court. It’s not that he buys necessarily buys his own story, just that he positions himself this way, likely because he knows having Gil to complain about keeps him employed (Gil’s not his white whale, he’s Marty’s meal ticket). And that’s an opposition that Gil sanctions, and perhaps craves. He and Mimi have gone to bat for Marty on multiple occasions (this story, threatening to cancel the Bishop Tardy basketball game if TAP refused Marty access, helping him out post DUI), and why? Because they’re nice, fair people? Well sure, if you want to believe something boring…

No, Marty’s bombast staves off genuine threats to Gil’s position. Moon’s listeners surely find him fun, but do they really take his positions seriously? Doubtful, at least for hose who have influence, and Gil knows that. That’s why so many of Gil’s foils wind up attached to Moon before their comeuppance. Moon damages their credibility with anyone who actually has influence over Gil’s position and Moon himself will sometimes do the dirty work of disposing of Gil’s enemies as he has done here.

RobbyBobby thought he could muscle in on Marty AND Gil’s positions in Milford with some statistical analysis that was actually probably relevant and fair and a teaser billboard campaign. He never understood what made their dynamic work or why it would be dangerous to try and break into it. And he got slapped down hard, which I rather enjoyed. Honestly, this is a story arc that would be pretty good if you could flesh it out more by disposing of the depression Fillion filler strips.

  2. Bobby getting shitcanned today sort of reminds me of Billins when Paul Giamatti gives Brian similar treatment:

  3. I’m sure this makes Mike Filion feel a whole lot better about himself. That, and the fact that he is now the final remaining plot thread that Rubin will have to stick with for about six weeks.

  4. So let’s answer those phones. Maybe some callers agree with Bobby.

  5. Booby, learn from this next time you take matters into your own hands when trying to depose the King in his Court, either the coach or the DJ.

And while you’re busy taking your foot out of your mouth, take a lesson any good coach will tell you(aw, Hell, I’ll throw in Gil, JUST THIS ONCE) and that’s “Silence is seldom misquoted.”

Not that this really thrills me to see Booby get his comeuppance when you consider the source. I wouldn’t even call it a Pyhrric victory. You entail many losses and win. Marty kept his job and is livin’ large in P2, basking in the ‘DIG boss tossing Booby out on his rump.

No, I’d say slime outsmarted another slime so that he can continue to broadcast his own brand of slime. What a ride off into the sunset. Hi yo, Silver!!!!

Anyway, Booby, hit the road, Jack.

  7. So not only does Marty have Evil Spock’s facial hair, he also has his boots.

  8. Marty may have come out on top this time, but if it weren’t for his accidental encounter with Mimi, he would be the one packing his shit and leaving. The station manager has shown that he’s pretty stupid too.
