Then Why Is The Hippo On The Bench?

043019

Folks, this Spring’s softball plot, such as it is, has done nothing for me other than to raise question after question.

Does the media center really have movies on VHS cassette tapes? How often does the copy of Howard’s End get checked out?

Where did the rolled up newspaper come from? Do these two ever not pick at each other?

Seriously, why is the Rally Hippo on the bench? Is Jocelyn Jamila the Rally Hippo wrangler or how does that even work?

  1. Linda’s fading passion for volleyball reminds me of Faulkner’s statement: “…the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about …”
And now Rubin writing of the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which can be exploited for an unremarkable comic strip because he has to fill in the panels somehow.

  2. Just for shits and giggles, go back and read a few GTs from 10-15 years ago and then compare such strips to any of the the strips from 2017-2019. The metamorphosis from something relatively interesting to the current state of storytelling is almost unbelievable.

  3. This plot is having the same problem establishing a direction as a Nova Scotia weathervane in April. Losing patience here.

  4. Boo hoo. Don’t play volleyball. Apply for student loans. Waste 4 years on a shit major. Find a job you could have easily garnered after high school without wasting upwards of $120,000

  5. This dilemma would make an interesting spring storyline — if only Rubin had identified it at the beginning of the season and carried it through. As it is, this season seems more like a case of “throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and see what sticks.”
