Shindig At The Schurings, Bring Your Mom

Yesterday, Gil had his post-game moment with Oakwood’s coach, and now we switch to the team’s perspective…and what a perspective.

Our QB has an announcement…which he conveyed via text. So where is QB Chris Schuring? Has he already left? There are some players still in full uniform while the guy standing in panel 1 is already in civies. I guess everyone moves at their own pace and some guys like to linger in their sweaty gear. Schuring is already halfway to the Beverage Castle to pick up refreshments, I guess.

The idea of an impromptu party for kids and their parents seems very weird. It kind of seems like a party where nobody is really going to have much fun. Things are different in Milford. Maybe some parents like to do beer bongs or maybe the Schurings have a caterer on call and can have rumaki for one hundred at a moment’s notice.

It’s good that the unknown Mudlark in panel 3 (how high up out of panel does his hair go?) starts laying down some ground rules for the party. He probably has a mobile dj rig in his car and he’s been itching to bust it out all summer. The parents shall stay inside, listen to Steely Dan and feel each other out on who might be down to swing.

Ah heck, forget all these flights of fancy. The only reason the parents are involved is a pretext so Chet can show up and be an asshole.

Take it away, Jonathan Richman

  1. Agree. Chet is gonna be a drunken loudmouth, which is better than the football team taking advantage of a passed out girl I guess. Most kids wouldn’t want to be at a party that includes parents. What is this? Pee wee football? Who’s bringing the Little Caesar’s pizza, gummy bears, and juice boxes?

  2. I was unaware this song existed until a fellow long-time fan let me know about it. Anyway, seems appropriate for today’s strip:

  3. Nice choice of tuneage Ned.
    “All the chicks
    In the Tank Town strip
    Go Milford Rocks!
    Milford Rocks !”

  4. Ned, excellent choice of music today. “Can’t Buy a Thrill” is to die for, a disc that cranked out “Do It Again”, “Dirty Work”, and “Reelin’ in the Years”. Ahhhh, the memories. My sister was playing “Aja” on her record player to death. “Deacon Blues” got a lot of air play around the house(and still does on the radio stations all over the globe).
I will check out Jonathon Richman. He seems to have a handle on the music business.

You are not alone in your assessment of the player’s hair in P3. At least Gil can fit his Everly Brothers within the panel. That dude’s a major prime candidate for some hieroglyphic somewhere in King Tut’s burial room. Kids, don’t wear hair like that at home.

  5. As usual, ned has set the price: the reason for the party is to give Chet a chance to make an ass of himself. I have a feeling that Charlie is going to be embarrassed in front of his teammates, and that Charlie’s mom may have to knee her new beau. Somebody ought to. And yes, that is a remarkable haircut in panel 3, on I think Andre. Or did he graduate?

  6. I think Andre did graduate. Maybe it’s Weird Harold. T drew maybe I’m wishing I did but I’m thinking I may have done a Rock n Roll Thursday on Jonathan Richman.

  7. Cool song, Tim. I’d never heard of it either.
