Muench Salami

Filed under: actual action, baseball, Marty Moon, Secret Thoughts — nedryerson @ 5:55 am

We’re really making a meal out of the opener against Thibodaux! I think we are still in the third inning. We’ve got plate discipline, speed on the base path and POWER! Marty is loving it. That’s it. I got nothing.

So, let’s look at Tom Meunch, digging in at the plate. See how he’s holding the bat with his left hand and extending his right hand behind him? What is that? We I see that in professional ball, I assume it’s a signal to the umpire that the batter is still getting set up (maybe still getting feet situated?) in the batter’s box and not quite ready. Maybe it’s a balance thing too? I don’t know. It’s something I’ve seen a million times but never really thought about until this moment. I wonder, if this is an “I’m not quite ready” signal, how does that come across in high school? Does an ump just tell the kid to put his hand down and get ready because you’re in the box and the pitch is coming, son?

  1. I finally figured out this entire strip! First, isn’t it obvious that Marty Moon is really Denny Doherty from the Mamas & the Papas? He’s out to bring chain restaurants to Mfnrd, and willing to plant breakfast memes to do it!

  2. YES! Baseball action, finally! Is it too early to start talking Playdowns?

  3. Muench is asking for time out, or as Ned says, asking the ump to stall for a second while he gets situated.

  4. Back in the day when I coached my daughter’s softball team, there was a girl on another league team who didn’t quite get that you are supposed to hold your hand up to the ump, not the pitcher, like she was doing every time she batted, so I told my pitcher next time she does that, lob the ball over the plate. We did it twice for to her for called strikes and her protests to the ump were met with “you were in the box” After that, the batter learned (from her coach) to signal the ump and not the other way around. Speaking of bad coaches, what’s the Tibs coach doin’ while this is goin’ on? No wonder Gil wanted to play these guys. And how does Butt Meunch knock the ball out of the park with a broomstick?

  5. The way Meunch is digging in he should have got a fastball in the ear. Unfortunately, the way this pitcher is getting shelled it’d probably be a 62 mph “fastball”. Wacky Breakfast ( Will be referred to as WB by me most of the time from now on) May get one too if he keeps on stealing in what may be an eventual blowout. So far this group of Mudlarks are easy to root against led of course by King Turd, Gil Thorp.

  6. Funny, funny, Downpuppy and Frank. Downpuppy, I think you captured this one for all of us. And Frank, I agree. That thing is a wiffleball job. That’s the bat mom bought for us at Kmart when we were kids and played sandlot with it on the vacant lot next door all summer long. Evidently, Muench is Andre Dawson with it. Wishful thinking, T-verse.
