This Week in Milford

Dont give up. Dont ever give up.

Ah, the words of Jimmie Valvano at the ESPYs when he was dying of cancer back in the 90’s. He wasnt one of my favorite coaches (and if you read the excellent book Personal Fouls you’ll see an even seedier side) but in the end he had everyones sympathy for his handling of terminal cancer that took his life way too soon.

Mike’s mom wants to fight the good fight for her son understandably, but the time frame for this is fuzzy. Its May 15. Im not sure what grade Mike is in, but if he’s a senior, forget it. Heck even if he’s a junior, by the time any court hears this and renders a positive decision, school will be out for summer.

So Mikes dad sees the lawyer and she recommends appealing to the school board. Why cant this be done without seeing her? Lawyers arent cheap you know. Besides wasting a panel (and God knows we’ve blown a shitload of them on repeating statements) all we get is a rehashing of facts already known. He meant no harm, and the schools policy is zero tolerance. Thank you sir may I have another.

So at this rate we may be in court all summer. Or at least til the 4th of July. By then I’ll be able to get a haircut in my state and even eat at a restaurant.

PROGRAM NOTE: I will be taking a long-overdue vacation next weekend camping and kayaking. So I’m leaving the Mayors whereabouts to whoever wants to fill in next Friday. See you all in 2 weeks.

  1. Where’s Perry Mason when you need him?

“The Case of the Char-Faced Expellee.”

  2. Forget the school board… Go to the media! Or just appeal directly to the governor in the most loud and obnoxious way possible…

Show me any governor or state legislature who wouldn’t jump at the chance to aid a decent all-American family victimized by PC overreach or whatever…

  3. In P3, Mr Nappy looks like he’s about ready to say “… no kidding, you fuckin bimbo…. I didn’t hire you to read this to me… I hired you to do something to overturn this shit, so get hoppin….now, goddamit…”

  4. Jim Valvano. What a guy. Could Chris Washburn even read? Suit ‘em up and call him a student athlete. Remember when NC State won the title? Cameras on Valvano looking for someone to hug. No one offered. Wonder why?

  5. Robmize and Jive Turkey, the classic case, for me anyway, was Sam Drummer. He was a Parade All-America back in 1975 along with Kyle Macy and Bill Cartwright. And Bob Knight was high on getting him, since he played at Muncie, Indiana, Northside High School, a short hop across the state to Bloomington.
Until he read Drummer’s transcript. And it wasn’t pretty.
Over 60% of his academic load was P.E. classes or basket-weaving and Knight calls up Drummer and flat-out said “Forget about coming to IU.” End of story.
A sad reality to remind us to always have something to fall back on when playing sports, he wound up later on at Ball State-as the janitor. Yup, he swept the floors right before BSU took the court for a game.
A cruel irony was a sportswriter who was in a conversation with people around him who said “You’re looking at the best player in the gym. He’s over there with a mop.”
It’s why I tell people “Get your degree”. Simple as that. As much as I respect Drummer’s game, the dude should have known better than to let the system use him like that. A lesson we can all learn.

  7. @Jive Turkey: I remember it well. Jimmy V’s Wolfpack beat my alma mater in the semifinals. Hugh Durham was our coach and it was the last time a team advanced to the Final Four in its first ever Big Dance. We thought we might become a basketball power. That hasn’t happened.

Today’s post coming directly. Enjoy your vaca, Rob.

  8. Personal Fouls was an interesting read, especially the part where Valvano told the team that coach like Bobby Knight wouldn’t put up with shit like being late to practice and he had Mike Giomi, an IU transfer, confirm it. Just what was his point?
