This Week in Milford

Off the Road, On to Home Cooking

As Ned alluded to in his comment to his Monday post, GoComics has switched to the color version of the strip, so we’ll be in living color from now on, most likely.

This of course will allow us to snark on inconsistencies in hair or skin color as well as the on the absurdity of coloring an already dark uniform red. Low hanging fruit. I preferred the b&w version myself as it left more to the imagination.

We start today’s strip with some exposition. Presumably Zane Clark got through another inning and “Gonzo” Gonzales closed the door on Nottingham and got the save. Zane then gets the hold and gets to hold Katy’s hand before she’s off to the Milford Activity Bus for a road trip.

The Lady Mudlarks have traveled to Syracuse, NY to face Henninger, a team whose home unis look a lot like the Padres’ road uniforms of the early 2000s. Maybe that’s not “sand” but “khaki” and, along with the nickname, a nod to the Black Knights of the Hudson. In any event, the colorists actually got it close to right on this one.

Tomorrow will bring us another Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? moment, one that will probably revolve around the use or lack thereof of the Milford Public Library. In the meantime, let’s just appreciate that today’s strip answers the question “Which Corina is best Corina?”: the one that is neither seen nor heard.

  1. Teenchy, I liked what a Sports Illustrated staff writer said about the Padre uniforms of the ’70’s and ’80’s, comparing them to a Tuesday Night Industrial League Slo-Pitch Softball League bit of apparel.

And picking up where we left off where sports action is an afterthought and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?(good one, Teenchy) is the feature presentation. Naturally, Gil is in none of these panels, taking an early leave to the links.

  2. So Kay and her adorable little friend are having dinner with Mr Personality rather than hangin at the Bucket. I bet the next time they get a choice over the bucket or the company of Mr Bandito, it will be a no- brainer to go to the bucket instead of listening what is sure to be a hissy fit about the shortcomings of the library. What drama indeed

  3. Yeah, this dinner will go badly. Will we find out why Mr. Burrito hates Zane? I’m guessing no, it will be dragged out for a month until we find out it is for some reason that is really dumb.

  4. Nottingham, Henninger, what did I tell you? Look for other Syracuse teams– Corcoran, J-D, J-E, F-M, and the other alphabeticals.

  5. I made a little song up in Spanish to prepare Zane for his big dinner at the Brito’s

    Cena en Brito’s
    No es Doritos
    Tienen Nachos
    Y Gazpacho
    Y su padre
    Es un borracho

  6. What the hell is Zane’s finger doing in panel 1?

And we finally get our official confirmation that Peppermint Patty is a gamer after all… I don’t know why all the ringers and talented mercenaries in the region always want to transfer to Milford, though… Your guess is as good as mine

  7. @tdrewhardin — It’s funny because in a master stroke of cross-marketing genius, those old San Diego unis were designed in the same style as the McDonald’s employee outfits… I think it was even Ray Kroc’s idea…
