This Week in Milford

Behind The Playbook Podcast Sponsored By UFS Canned Beverage

Filed under: Valley Tech, Where is Milford? — nedryerson @ 10:51 am

Marty Moon records a podcast at the studios of WDIG, the Behind The Playbook podcast to be specific. I have heard of some radio shows that are released as podcasts. Maybe Marty produces enough hot take content that he can put out a podcast seperate from his daily show. Maybe if his special guest Luke Hernnadez, the new sheriff from Valley Tech (hey, wasn’t that Luke Martinez? who goofed, the strip’s creators or Marty?), is as big a blowhard as we’ve seen so far, Marty can team up with him to make a real screaming freak show of a podcast. Dozens of people can download Playbook every week to hear new drunken ravings from goateed loudmouths.

So, what are Marty and Luke Martinez Hernnadez talking about? Well, Marty heard about the verbal sparring between Gil and Sheriff Luke at the Post Coach of The Year Hotel Bar Gathering. (Forget the award ceremony…THIS is the event of the year! Too bad it’s held at a secret location.) Where did Marty hear about the “stir”, from one of those two other guys in polo shirts or from the bartender that’s sweet on Gil? Who called the Marty Moon Behind The Playbook tip line (and what poor PA has to monitor the tip line and pull out anything useful among all the “Marty Sucks! Baba-Booey!” messages)? If this is the kind of content one regularly hears on the Behind The Playbook podcast, it wouldn’t surprise me if Marty just uses the studio to record it and puts it out on his own. I don’t think a radio station would want this going out under their name. Marty, what are you doing in there?!

Note that Luke Hernnadez states that he’s the young buck that this town needs. So, is Valley Tech actually in Milford? I’d always assumed that the Valley Conference was spread among many towns in a geographical area that includes Milford. That could be the case and Valley Tech could still be in Milford. It’s just weird that it has never been defined that way. But really, there have been and probably will be many liberties taken with things with the new writer and I’m not gonna harp on this stuff constantly. I gotta harp on something though, so why not a little more of the old Where Is Milford?

  1. Milford is everywhere. And yet, it is nowhere.

Yeah, the writer goofed up the name today, but he can always just claim it’s perpetually drunk Marty screwing up. At least, that’s how I’d handle it!

  2. I agree with the assumption that The Valley includes multiple cities. I always thought Milford was the only high school in Milford, but there’s no precedent for an actual location for any of the schools. Except Central City. So yeah, there could be more than one high school in Milford. And in fact, there is now for sure.

  5. From the Tribune press release announcing the new writer, Henry Barajas, who’s a graphic-novel author:

He will bring sharp dialogue and contemporary storylines that reach a new generation of comics page readers.

“I’m passionate when it comes to comic strips — and Gil Thorp holds a special place in my heart. I’m excited to tell the best story while putting the titular character and his loved ones through some tough times. Let’s say Gil Thorp will face 2022 real-world problems.”

I have enough real-world problems. I think I’m checking out. You don’t have to hold my place in line anymore at The Bucket.

  6. 1. Is this the first time Luna has ever interviewed a local coach other than Gilberto?

1a. Is this the first time Luna has ever conducted an interview while sober?

    2. Tomorrow Luna’s going to start ripping off some ethnic cracks, isn’t he?

  7. The new ‘young buck’ is modest too. He’s calling Gil scared, even though Gil didn’t seem bothered by his loud drunk ass in the least; for a guy with a 0-0 record in ‘The Valley’, he sure is proud of himself; my guess is his team will spank MHS the first time they meet, but Gil will somehow humiliate this boastful hair-ball down the road when it matters, like in the puh-puh-playdowns. Won’t be the first time someone punked themselves out on MM’s show by simply responding to a couple of baited questions from MM.

  8. Thanks for the rimshot, ned. I agree with psemerson. But I will continue to read Gil Thorp if only, and yes only because of TWIM. But I agree with him on the real world problems. I said it in a different way when this guy was taking over. I said be careful what you wish for. And where’s the golf?!

  9. Athletics Director? Is that the same thing as an Athletic Director, the term I have heard mt whole life.
What does Hernandez going to do to make himself the big man in town in this podunk comunity?

  10. Real life problems ain’t exactly new in Mfnrd. Hungry Aaaaron Aaaaaagard, the homeless kid, blindness, pregnancy – the only thing new is if something affects His Gilness personally.

  11. A bigger question for me is what is Nacho Lucha drinking in panels 2 and 3? In P2 it almost looks like it says “DUFF”, which would be consistent with him talking big while drinking, and also a little nod from Whigham to The Simpsons. But in P3 it looks more like “UFE” which I guess probably means “United Fighting Excrement”, the hot new energy concoction for combative personalities.

  12. Not UFS nor UFE
    Just little old me

  13. Call me crazy but isn’t “young buck” a pejorative/racist epithet? Seems like Jimmy the Greek got into trouble for talk like that. Then again, who’s actually listening to Marty’s podcast?

Also “post coach of the year hotel bar gathering” sounds like something out of Funky Winkerbean, like “vendo” or solo car date.” It might make more sense with a few hyphens or reordering of words.

  14. It is considered slightly racist – it’s way down on the list of definitions and most people (including me) were unaware. The new writer didn’t know either, and is changing the language for future reprints.
