This Week in Milford

Between Valley Tech and Milford lies OBSESSION.

We’re still going over the 1987 “game film” (and by “game film,” I mean “a VHS copy of TV 2’s broadcast”) of the state championship game with Gil and Maestro Turturro, but the end is near. Valley Tech has edged the Mudlarks, 14-10 for the title, and Ringo Starr Marty Moon is on hand to interview the star of the game, Luke “El Tigre” Martinez.

El Tigre’s strip of the hula-dancing Mudlark receiver saved the game for Tech, but all Hairy Luke can focus on is Gil and his “spot.” Clearly this is not some kind of revenge fantasy: Tech won the game, no? Was it Gil’s coaching job at Milford and his hot blonde wife Mimi that Luke was coming for? The career sacrifice, marrying the hot med student, becoming a stay-at-home-dad so the the hot med student wife could become a successful heart surgeon – all part of a 35-year-long game to get him to the point that he could coach another Valley Tech team to beat Milford?

Seems like the Milford Star coverage of the game only added fuel to a fire that was burning long before the final whistle. Dude’s got some serious-ass issues to work through. Get help, Luke. We might get more backstory in support of the Martinez monomania, but in the meantime, enjoy the inspiration for today’s post title.

NINETEEN EIGHTY-SEVEN, And I’m back on the scene,
I done chilled I’m legit; And I’m fuckin’ up shit!

    I’m ready to peel a Mudlark’s cap,
And I heard that my hood was makin’ snaps…

As I precede to make my riches
Just like the neighborhood kingpin, pimpin’ all these bitches…

    Gilberto tryin’ to roll deep
But, I’m playin’ his punk fools cheap!

Milford rolled by and try to blast, it didn’t work,
I seen them bullets flying and fool I hit the dirt…

    Bullets fly through the window
Hits my brother, down goes my mother…

As I’m rolling, I’m hitting my switches
Looking for the punk ass sons of bitches!

I found them, before I killed ’em, I said “You fucked up good!”
Gotta handle that, growin’ up in the hood!!

  2. I’m disappointed Mr. Barajas didn’t stay long enough to answer our questions yesterday… 😐

  3. But seriously though… It is my scientific opinion that Lucha Libre is absolutely fucked in the head. I have no doubt that he makes his buxom wifey put on a Gilberto mask and red polo shirt before he jumps her bones every night because it’s the only way he can get it up!

  4. Good points Hitorque…and the expression on Gil’s face in P2 reminds me of when the kid winks at the pitcher in Field of Dreams, and the pitcher only thinks that the kid is making a pass at him (at 00:48):

  5. Frank and Hitorque, You keep coming through!!!!!!!!
LMAO at your comments today. I had to put my phone down, I was laughing so hard. Bring it on, Baby!!!!!!!!!!!

Teenchy, LOVED the Ringo dig. I mean, I remember for decades when Marty looked like The Devil when Walter Mitty wanted to be a Yankee. Now he looks like a member of the Ten Years After at Woodstock. God, is Yasgur’s farm near Gil’s house? My o My.

  6. Marty’s mustache is a nice touch, and Martinez going all Ahab over an opposing team’s coach is enjoyably dopey. I’ll say I’m mildly curious as to where this is going.

  7. “I’m disappointed Mr. Barajas didn’t stay long enough to answer our questions yesterday…”

I got to correct myself because he DID come back to answer in yesterday’s thread and I applaud him for it!!

@henrybarajas I hope we don’t scare you off and that you’ll become a periodic visitor here. Yes we’re all ironic hate-readers but we’re also all adults who know where the line is drawn. I think I speak for everyone when I say we have no desire for you to ever think we’re directing these daily comments to you personally. Yes we know the difficulty of making storylines and characters each season that don’t overlap too much with the previous 50+ years of Milfordverse content. We appreciate there’s only so much you can develop with 3 daily panels, no Sunday strip while keeping it all G-rated…

And in case you’re wondering, I have personal names or nicknames for the entire Milfordverse, i.e., Gilberto Tharpe, Kazuo Luzinski, Martinez L. Luna, etc. I’ve been calling you “Rod” Barajas after the catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates I used to follow when I was young…

  8. I’m thinking Milford wins the upcoming game, and then an enraged Lucha goes postal coming into Milford HS armed and looking for Thorp, therefore tying together the active shooter segment earlier. There was a plan to tie everything in those loose ends together all along! But which of teen Thorp girl’s admirers takes a bullet to save Gil, therefore earning her undying love?

  9. @hitorque, I guess I must have been somewhat tuned out on MLB when Rod Barajas was behind the dish for the Pirates. I was a Manny Sanguillén fan as a young guy and was also rather fond of Mike LaValliere during their last run of division titles (which was over 30 MFing years ago!). Sanguillén…LaValliere…Barajas…. all great names, but what about Ed Ott and Don Slaught, and who could forget Duffy Dyer?

  10. Teenchy,

P3-“Lawler, you call yourself “The King” but Friday night, 8:30, at the Milford Gardens, in the Milford Tornado Rules Match, you’ll just be Burger King to me.”

  11. […] body language. Is is possible that these games are still broadcast on channel 2, just like back in 1987? Maybe a TV guy is making the observation about the coaching staff. Marty kinda has his hands […]
