Credit where credit is due: In Luke Martinez, Henry has created one toxic character. His never-ending obsession to one-up Gil Thorp and beat Gil’s teams in every sport he coaches has managed to suck in both his assistant coach and Gil himself. He’s also managed to piss off his elder son who, if there’s any sense of irony in this strip, will soon quit the team and/or transfer to Milford High in the fall.
Why does Gil need to call Hamm? To ask him if he’s seen the Korean Nightmare* clip? He should know the answer to that.
Coachella is looking a bit off-character today BTW, Chief. She needs to shave.
That’s all I’ve got for today. My laptop has been crashing and not recognizing its charger for weeks, and today I finally had to back it up and reinstall the OS. Took hours. Sorry not to have more pithy insights.
Oh, wait: I came across this online earlier this week. It dates from the late 1930s and might be as appropriate to share as Kaz’s out-of-left-field Cab Calloway reference a few days ago.

1. Lucha Libre benched his own son for cussing him out and showing him up? That’s actually a respectable stand-up response from LL…
2. GODDAMN IT FOREIGN EXCHANGE PROGRAMS DON’T WORK THAT WAY (actually I’m not sure how they really work but I bet it’s not like this)
3. Would it kill Barajas to give us an occasional pitching stat line? Or tell us what’s in Kwon’s arsenal that allegedly makes him so dominant? I mean for fuck’s sake everybody keeps calling him “nightmare” and I want to see the reason!
4. TIME-OUT… Exactly what the hell is calling Gregggg Hammmm going to accomplish? Is Gilberto going to put him in uniform and sneak him on the roster for one last game against the Korean Nightmare? Besides, isn’t Gregggg a grown ass man now? Shouldn’t he be working somewhere for a living?
5. What the hell with the Lakers?

“Benched” confuses me. Sending in a reliever is a perfectly normal thing. Did 3-2-1 Kwan Tak just get to the field where Pedro was supposed to start, having never even met the team? Does Milford not have lineup cards? A pitching staff? Would it break Henry’s heart to give a clue as to what’s going on in the game? Even Old Hoss Radbourn & Wilbur Wood didn’t pitch every inning.

Lucha Libre didn’t bench Pedro for cussing him out, he came out and told him he was being yanked for no good reason and then the cussing started. The grounding was the response which was not really responsible, ha.
As far as the Lakers, this series has been very enjoyable. As has the Celtics struggles.

Wait… I know Pedro was pulled from the game for a reliever, and since Barajas didn’t give us ANY context WHATSOEVER we don’t know if he was cruising or if he just walked in the tying run with no outs in the last inning…
I took “benched” to mean Pedro misses a start or two and I figured it happened off-panel? Because knowing what we know about Lucha Libre, there’s no way on God’s green Earth that such an egotist snowflake would ever allow being second-guessed and cussed out in public in front of his own players, the crowd and the opposing team without some swift repercussions….

If we go by what we’ve seen in previous strips, in Mfnrd there is only one pitcher per team. He or she just takes the mound every game, and finishes what they start. Lucha came out before Pedro threw a pitch & had coach Kim Trailways insert The Nightmare. Gildo & Cami are seeing it a day later, and calling Gregggggg for, well, I have no idea.

Teenchy, LOVED the Cab Calloway exhibit. They got people constantly trying to locate it on places like Amazon or EBay. It’s Americana that’s a buried treasure, IMO.
