Worst Panels of 2007, Polls Now Open!

Filed under: metapost — jasbeattie @ 11:41 am

Trying to determine the worst panels of this comic over the past year was, as you might imagine, an arduous task. With the number of legitimate entrants determined by the following formula:

(365 * 3)/Recycled Panels

there was a lot of crap to cull through, not to mention I had to take several breaks in order to visit the emergency room with a case of bleeding eyeballs. But the polls are now open! The field has been narrowed to five random, ridiculous categories…so in no particular order, let’s get started!

Nominees, Miscellaneous Mutant Division:

Elderly baseball kid, with a bonus Clambake chaser!
mutant-baseball-kid.gif

Dog-faced first base chick, with bonus wacky dialogue of “Give it a ride!”

  1. Great job with the nominees, Jason! This made my day! The toughest call for me was the Craptacular Action Division. The crazy 45-degree-angle basketball game has always been one of my favorites, but in the end, I had to go for Cully’s skating elbow on a player who must be about 6’8″, 380 lbs.

Awful New Characters also required some thought, but I went with my tried-and-true Laugh Test. If the mere sight of a panel caused me to laugh for more than 90 straight seconds when I first saw it (or laugh uncontrollably enough to be noticed at work, regardless of duration), it’s a winner. Gyrating Cully passes the test, while The Kaz With Two Heads does not.

  2. Gil Thorp doesnt publish on Sundays, so its 313*3/recycled panels.

  3. But wait … if Dancin’ Cully was hilarious (which it is), how can it be possibly the Worst Panel of 2007? Sure, it absolutely fails at whatever action it’s trying to convey, but it wins at unintentional humor … and that’s gotta count for something.

  4. Isn’t the A-Trail strictly speaking a 2008 phenomenon? Not that we won’t have plenty of horrible panels of him for next year’s contest…

Anyway, link to this on my blog going up at earliest opportunity.

  5. Wow, this was a tough one – feel like a kid in a candy store nerd with bleeding eyeballs.

  6. Thi is gonn be tough Jason, I laughed my ass off at every single one.

Once again the Thorpian Christmas card freaed the hell out of me.

  7. I had a tooth pulled this morning, so it hurts to laugh. I should have stayed away from this blog today.

I voted for Curly Horse before reading Josh’s comment. He’s right, Curly Horse is a 2008 character. Oh well. It’s good to know we already have a strong candidate for 2008. Bodes well.

  8. The mutant group category was the toughest choice — every one of those is potentially a winner. I voted for the Christmas card but it was awfully hard to resist “bodies banging underneath the basket.”

  9. Andrew Gregory is likely to be a standout ass-clown for 2008, but as he debuted on December 27th, I felt he deserved the chance to compete as a freak in 2007 as well.

  10. OMG, what an incredible array! Cannot stop laughing long enough to make these tough, tough choices. Awesome work, dude.

Well, everyone has their own definitions, but mine go something like this: Best Panel = panel I enjoyed the most, for something approximating the reason I was supposed to. Best example: Kaz-Action-Punch. Worst Panel = panel I enjoyed the most, even though it wasn’t supposed to be enjoyed that way. I.e., just because it was so bad. But for me, awfully-drawn panels that provide no entertainment just fall under the category of “bland.”

(I’ll admit that there’s some gray area: I nominated “Ease up, friend!” for Best Panel and voted for it, but was I really laughing with Kaz, or at Kaz? More importantly, do I care? The answer to that question is no.)

  12. Oh man that was hilarious.
